The first-generation Sharan is a full-size seven-seat MPV built on a shared platform with the Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra, produced in Palmela, Portugal. The 1.9 TDI is the most popular engine choice, offered in multiple power outputs across its long production run. Early models (1995-2000) used conventional VP-style injection, while post-2000 cars switched to the PD (Pumpe-Duse) unit injector system. No DPF was fitted to any 1.9 TDI variant, which simplifies ownership considerably compared to later diesels.· more· less

Rust-prone body and chassis Electrical systems degrade with age
Buy if: You need an affordable seven-seat diesel with a manual gearbox, and you can find one with a solid body, complete service history, and no rust in the chassis rails.
Avoid if: You cannot inspect the underbody for structural corrosion, or the car has an automatic gearbox and incomplete service records.

Common Problems
Robust engine in a rust-prone body
The 1.9 TDI is one of VW's most durable diesel engines, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km when properly maintained. The absence of a DPF and AdBlue system removes two of the most common modern diesel headaches. However, the Mk1 Sharan's body is notably rust-prone due to poor factory underbody protection, and the electrical systems degrade significantly with age. PD-engined cars (2000 onwards) need the correct 505.01-spec oil to prevent camshaft wear. The manual gearbox is significantly more reliable than the automatic. A well-maintained example with a solid body structure can be an affordable and practical family car, but thorough underbody inspection is essential before purchase.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Twin-mass flywheel fire risk (Nov 2002 - Aug 2003 production) Critical - verify completed
Tandem fuel pump cover bolts (Mar 2004 - Aug 2004 production) Verify completed
Windscreen wiper motor failure (Nov 2001 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2006-2010 production) Verify completed
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The twin-mass flywheel recall (2002-2003 production) is a fire risk and safety-critical. The Takata airbag recall affects later production years. Given the age of these cars, verifying recall completion can be difficult if records are incomplete.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Sharan Mk1 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all models
All VW Sharan Mk1 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Extended warranty options for cars of this age are extremely limited and typically not cost-effective. Budget for repairs rather than relying on warranty coverage.
