A stylish coupe based on the Golf Mk5/Mk6 platform, the Scirocco offered sportier looks than the hatchback with similar running costs. Pre-facelift models (2008-2014) use the EA111 engine with a timing chain, available as a 122 hp single-turbo (CAXA) or 160 hp twincharger (CAVD) with both turbo and supercharger. The 2014 facelift switched to the improved EA211 (CZCA, 125 hp) with a timing belt, resolving the chain issues. Never officially sold in the US, the Scirocco has a dedicated following in Europe.· more· less

Common Problems
Pre-facelift needs careful buying, facelift is notably more reliable
The Scirocco 1.4 TSI splits into two distinct reliability profiles. Pre-2014 cars with the EA111 engine carry timing chain and twincharger risks that demand careful inspection and verified service history. The 2014+ facelift with the EA211 engine resolves the chain issue entirely and is substantially more dependable. Both generations share the DQ200 DSG weakness if fitted with the automatic gearbox. Manual versions are simpler and more reliable. Most engine issues are well-documented with known solutions, and parts availability remains excellent across Europe.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
ABS/ESP earth connection failure (May 2008 - Aug 2010 production) Verify completed
Airbag/seatbelt pretensioner manufacturing defect (May 2016 - Oct 2016 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (various production years 2008-2017) Verify with VIN
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all open recalls have been completed. The ABS/ESP recall is particularly important for early 2008-2010 models.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Scirocco Mk3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2014-2017 models
DSG extended warranty 5 years / 150,000 km on some markets (check with VW)
All Scirocco Mk3 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Some 2014-2017 models may still be within the 12-year perforation warranty. If the car has a DSG gearbox, check whether the extended DSG warranty might still apply in your market.
