The first-generation Volkswagen Sharan is a full-size seven-seat MPV built on a shared platform with the Ford Galaxy and SEAT Alhambra. The 1.8T 20V petrol engine (codes AJH/AWC) produces 150 hp and uses a KKK K03 turbocharger, paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox. Fuel consumption is higher than the diesel variants, but the petrol turbo avoids DPF and EGR issues entirely. Parts availability is excellent thanks to the engine being shared across the VW Group.· more· less

Cheap parts, engine shared widely No DPF/EGR diesel concerns
Oil sludge risk starves turbo Body electrics are troublesome
Buy if: You need a cheap seven-seater with a petrol engine and can verify the timing belt and oil change history is complete.
Avoid if: You cannot confirm regular oil changes with correct synthetic oil, or the car has a Tiptronic automatic gearbox with unknown service history.

Common Problems
Manageable with proper oil care, but body electrics are a constant nuisance
The 1.8T engine is mechanically capable of high mileage when maintained with correct synthetic oil and timely timing belt replacements. The turbo oil sludge issue is entirely preventable with proper servicing. However, the Sharan body adds MPV-specific problems that the simpler Golf or Passat variants of this engine avoid: window regulators, central locking wiring, and various plastic components that deteriorate with age. Parts are cheap and widely available, but the accumulated effect of multiple small repairs can add up. Manual gearbox cars are significantly more reliable than Tiptronic automatics.

Tandem fuel pump cover bolts (built Mar 2004 - Aug 2004) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (built May 2008 - Aug 2014) Verify completed
Door lock freezing (built Apr 1995 - Jan 1996) Verify if applicable
Contact a Volkswagen dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The twin-mass flywheel recall is particularly important for 2002-2003 models as it involves a fire risk.
