However, driving with a persistently misfiring cylinder can damage the catalytic converter over time, turning a cheap repair into an expensive one.

A design issue specific to the 1.2 three-cylinder is the close-coupled catalytic converter, which sits very near the cylinder head. During sudden throttle release (e.g., engine braking), hot exhaust gases can flow back toward the head rather than out through the exhaust. Over time, the extreme heat deforms the cylinder head and damages the exhaust valves. VW workshop training materials acknowledge this problem but no definitive fix exists beyond improved driving habits (avoiding aggressive engine braking). The electric door lock actuators on the 9N are prone to failure, typically from dry solder joints on the small PCB inside the lock module.
