The Polo Mk3 (6N/6N2) was Volkswagen's entry-level hatchback through the late 1990s, offering a step up in build quality over most competitors. The 1.4 petrol came in 8-valve (60 hp) and 16-valve (75 hp) forms, both mechanically straightforward and cheap to maintain. At this age, rust and worn-out ancillaries are the main concerns rather than fundamental engine problems.· more· less

Buy if: You want a cheap, simple runabout with readily available parts and can find one with solid bodywork and documented maintenance.
Avoid if: You cannot inspect for structural corrosion or the car has no service history and unknown timing belt status.

Common Problems
Mechanically simple but age-related corrosion is the main concern
The 1.4 engine in either 8-valve or 16-valve form is robust and well-proven, with no fundamental design flaws. At 25+ years old, the main ownership risks center on bodywork corrosion rather than mechanical failure. Rust in the sills and rear arches can make repairs uneconomical if allowed to progress. Electrical components (window motors, central locking, ignition) degrade with age but are inexpensive to replace. Cars with documented timing belt changes and solid bodywork can be genuinely cheap to run.
