The entry-level Golf Mk4 with the 1.4 16V engine offers low running costs and insurance, making it a popular first car. The 75 hp output is modest but adequate for urban commuting. Unlike the robust 1.6, the 1.4 aluminium-block engine has documented weaknesses around oil starvation and bore wear that owners should monitor closely. The later BCA-coded engine (2001 onwards) is considered more reliable than the earlier AHW/AKQ/APE variants.· more· less

Common Problems
Simple but age-related issues dominate at 20+ years old
The 1.4 16V engine is fundamentally simple with no turbo or direct injection to worry about, but the aluminium block is less forgiving of neglect than the 1.6's cast-iron unit. At this age, body rust is the primary concern and often determines whether a car is worth keeping. Electrical items (ABS module, coil packs, window regulators) fail predictably and are well-understood with affordable repair options. The later BCA engine code (2001 onwards) is noticeably more reliable than earlier variants.

Ford Focus 1.6 Zetec Mk1 1998-2004
Direct competitor with a very reliable Zetec engine. Focus has worse structural rust on sills but better engine longevity.

Volkswagen Golf GTI 1.8T Mk4 1998-2004
Same platform but turbocharged. Much higher running costs with turbo, coil pack, and oil sludge issues. More power but more expensive to maintain.
