The third-generation Scenic with the 1.4 TCe petrol is the rarer alternative to the dominant 1.5 dCi diesel in this MPV range. The H4J engine delivers 130 hp and reasonable performance for a family hauler, but it demands more attention than the diesel sibling. Renault sold most Scenic IIIs as diesels, so petrol examples with documented service history are less common on the used market.· more· less

Buy if: You prefer petrol over diesel for mostly mixed driving and can verify the timing chain has been inspected or replaced, with a complete service history.
Avoid if: You cannot tolerate the risk of engine work before 150,000 km, or you need a car for very short urban trips where the turbo never reaches operating temperature.

Common Problems
Engine requires close monitoring and strict maintenance
The 1.4 TCe H4J is the least reliable petrol engine Renault offered in the Scenic III range. The timing chain is a genuine concern from around 80,000 km onward, and the aluminium block's vulnerability to overheating means that any cooling system issue can escalate quickly into expensive engine work. Electrical niggles (UCH, EPB, instrument cluster) are shared with all Scenic III models. With strict oil change intervals, correct specifications, and proactive coolant monitoring, many owners do reach 150,000+ km, but this engine demands more attention than the 1.5 dCi or the later 1.3 TCe replacement.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front seat runner bolts not correctly tightened (produced until May 2016) Verify completed
Brake pedal stiffness on slope with H5Ft engine at idle (2009-2012) Verify if applicable
Electronic parking brake software update (2009-2010 early production) Verify completed
Window airbag inflator chemical mixture fault (Sep-Nov 2016 production) Verify if applicable
Contact Renault with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The seat runner bolt recall is particularly important for safety. The brake pedal recall specifically affects cars with the H5Ft engine, not the 1.4 TCe H4J, but verify with Renault to be certain.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used Scenic Mk3 models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all models produced before 2020
Extended warranty availability Available through Renault dealers and third-party providers
All Scenic III models are now well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Third-party extended warranties are available but check exclusions carefully, as timing chain and EPB issues may not be covered on high-mileage cars.
