All Q8 50 TDI models use a 48V mild hybrid system with a belt-driven starter-generator (BSG). The BSG's power transistors are prone to overheating, which causes the unit to fail. Symptoms include engine stalling, loss of start-stop function, and hybrid system warnings. When the BSG fails, it can drain the 48V lithium battery flat. Once a lithium battery is fully discharged, it often cannot recover, requiring replacement of both components. BSG replacement at an Audi dealer costs around €2,000, while the 48V battery adds another €1,500 if damaged. Specialist repair services can remanufacture the BSG for around €500-800. Air suspension is optional on the Q8 but widely specced. This risk only applies to cars equipped with adaptive air suspension. The engine's warning system only alerts when pressure drops below 0.6 bar, by which point damage may already have occurred. An ECU recalibration to raise minimum oil pressure targets costs €300-500 at a specialist and is strongly recommended as preventive maintenance. The ZF 8HP65A in the Q8 is generally reliable, but Audi markets it with a 'lifetime fill,' meaning many owners never change the transmission fluid. ZF itself recommends fluid changes every 60,000-80,000 km. Without regular fluid changes, the valve body develops issues causing harsh 1-2 shifts, hesitation from standstill, and occasional limp mode.
