2006-2008 · 4.2 FSI V8 BNS (420 hp) naturally aspirated petrol

The B7 RS4 is widely considered one of Audi's finest driver's cars. Its 4.2-litre V8 BNS engine revs to 8,250 rpm and produces 420 hp through a six-speed manual gearbox and permanent quattro all-wheel drive. Available as a saloon, Avant, and cabriolet, it was produced from 2006 to 2008. The engine is robust when maintained and uses metal timing chain guides (unlike the troublesome plastic ones in the B6/B7 S4), but direct injection creates carbon buildup that requires periodic cleaning.

High-revving V8 with strong bottom end Robust engine with metal chain guides
DRC suspension fails on nearly all cars Carbon buildup needs periodic cleaning
Buy if: You want a high-revving naturally aspirated V8 with manual gearbox and quattro, and can budget for DRC suspension work and specialist-level maintenance.
Avoid if: You want low running costs or cannot find a specialist familiar with the 4.2 FSI engine and DRC system.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs

Common Problems
Robust engine, but DRC and carbon buildup require commitment
The BNS 4.2 FSI V8 is a fundamentally strong engine with metal timing chain guides that avoids the catastrophic chain failures seen in the B6/B7 S4. Many examples exceed 200,000 km on original chains. However, the DRC suspension system fails on the vast majority of cars and the coilover conversion has become an accepted part of ownership. Carbon buildup from direct injection requires periodic cleaning. The oil cooler pipes corrode with age. These are manageable issues for a prepared buyer, but unbudgeted they add up quickly.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2006-2008 models with Takata front passenger airbag) Critical - verify completed
DRC damper seal deterioration (warranty extension to 5 years / 75,000 miles by Audi UK) Verify if applicable
Contact Audi with the VIN to verify all recalls and warranty extensions have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is a safety-critical item. The DRC warranty extension is now expired on all B7 RS4s.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all B7 RS4s
DRC extended warranty (5 years) Expired on all B7 RS4s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all B7 RS4s
All B7 RS4 models are well outside any manufacturer warranty. Budget accordingly for all repairs. Extended warranty options for a car of this age are limited and typically exclude known issues like DRC.

Audi RS4 2.7T biturbo B5 2000-2001 First RS4 with twin-turbo V6. Turbos and boost leaks are the main risk. More complex forced-induction drivetrain than the B7's naturally aspirated V8. BMW M3 E92 2007-2013 Direct competitor with S65 V8 revving to 8,300 rpm. Rod bearing wear is a known risk. Rear-wheel drive gives a different driving character. Mercedes-AMG C63 W204 2007-2014 6.2L V8 with more torque but automatic only. Pre-2011 cars carry a head bolt corrosion risk. Higher fixed costs due to larger engine. Audi RS6 5.0 TFSI V10 C6 2008-2010 Same era but twin-turbo V10 with significantly higher running costs. Turbo failures and carbon buildup are common. Much more expensive to maintain. Audi RS5 4.2 FSI V8 B8 2010-2015 Same engine family but with S tronic gearbox. Adds gearbox complexity but is newer with better interior. Same DRC suspension concerns.
