2017-2019 · 3.0 TFSI EA839 (354 hp) turbocharged V6

The B9 S5 replaced the previous supercharged 3.0 TFSI with a new turbocharged V6 (EA839), co-developed with Porsche and paired with the proven ZF 8-speed automatic. Available as Coupe, Sportback, and Cabriolet, it offers 354 hp through a permanent quattro system. In Europe, the petrol TFSI version was only sold from 2017 to 2019 before the B9.5 facelift switched to a 3.0 TDI diesel. The EA839 engine is capable but has several known weak points that require informed ownership.

Strong turbocharged V6, refined chassis ZF 8-speed gearbox is proven reliable
Water pump design flaw on EA839 Rocker arm risk on pre-mid-2018 cars
Buy if: You want a refined performance coupe or sportback with quattro AWD and can verify the water pump has been updated and rocker arms are revised on early cars.
Avoid if: You cannot budget for potentially expensive cooling system or engine repairs, or are considering a pre-2018 car with unconfirmed component revisions.

Common Problems
Known cooling system and early-production issues require careful buying
The EA839 turbocharged V6 is fundamentally capable and many examples exceed 150,000 km without major powertrain problems. However, the water pump design flaw is a genuine concern on all B9 S5s and should be the primary focus of any pre-purchase inspection. Early production cars (2017 to mid-2018) additionally carry rocker arm risk. Post-mid-2018 cars with the revised water pump and rocker arms are notably lower risk. The ZF 8-speed gearbox is one of the most reliable automatics available and is rarely a source of problems.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Passenger Occupant Detection System (PODS) airbag cable fault (2018 S5 models) Verify completed
Seat heater cable disabling passenger airbag (2018-2020 S5 models) Verify completed
Piston skirt warranty extension to 8 years/130,000 km (all EA839 models) Verify with VIN
Contact Audi with the VIN to verify all recalls and warranty extensions have been applied. The piston skirt warranty extension is particularly important as it covers a known design limitation through 8 years from first registration.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used B9 S5 TFSI models
Piston skirt extended warranty 8 years / 130,000 km from first registration, transferable
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still be active on 2017-2019 cars
All B9 S5 3.0 TFSI models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The piston skirt warranty extension (8 years/130,000 km) may still cover some cars depending on first registration date. This is transferable to subsequent owners and covers diagnosis and repair if Audi confirms a piston skirt defect.
