Premium compact crossover on the MQB platform, sharing its core mechanicals with the Audi A3, Volkswagen T-Roc, and SEAT Ateca. The 35 TDI uses the well-proven 150 hp EA288 2.0 TDI four-cylinder diesel (engine codes DFGA and DTSC), paired with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed DQ381 wet-clutch S tronic. Production ran from 2017 to 2024, with a mild facelift in 2020. It delivers good motorway fuel economy (around 5.0-5.5 l/100 km) and a refined, quiet drive at higher speeds.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable for motorway use, problematic for city driving
The Q2 35 TDI is a solid long-distance car built around one of the most widely used diesel engines in Europe. The EA288 2.0 TDI itself is mechanically durable, with many examples exceeding 250,000 km on original internals when properly serviced. However, the Euro 6 emissions hardware (DPF, EGR, SCR/AdBlue) does not tolerate short urban trips and is responsible for the majority of expensive surprises. Service history and usage pattern matter more than raw mileage: a 140,000 km motorway car with complete records can be a better buy than a 70,000 km city-only car with warning lights. If the car has the S tronic gearbox, verify that DSG oil changes have been performed at 60,000 km intervals.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuse box wiring harness loosening (2019-2023 production Q2 and A3 models) Verify completed
Brake pedal plate weld joint failure risk Verify if applicable
Windscreen adhesive insufficiently secure Verify if applicable
Emissions software update (selected EA288 diesel models) Verify completed
Front passenger airbag deactivation switch (early production) Verify if applicable
Contact an Audi dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The fuse box wiring harness recall is particularly important as it can cause sudden loss of instrument lighting and motive power while driving.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used Q2 35 TDIs
Rust perforation warranty 12 years from first registration
Audi Approved Used warranty Available through Audi dealers, typically 12-24 months
All used Q2 35 TDIs are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Audi's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply depending on the registration date. Audi Approved Used cars from official dealers often include an extended warranty, but verify exact coverage and exclusions before relying on it.

Petrol sibling without DPF or AdBlue. Has ACT cylinder deactivation which can cause hesitation at low rpm. Cheaper emissions maintenance overall.
BMW X2 sDrive18d F39
BMW X2 sDrive18d F39 2018-2023
Direct competitor with BMW B47 diesel. Similar DPF concerns and an EGR cooler fire risk recall. Generally dependable when maintained.
BMW X1 sDrive18d E84
BMW X1 sDrive18d E84 2009-2015
Older generation competitor with the N47 engine, which has serious timing chain failure risk. The Q2's EA288 is significantly more reliable.
Audi Q2 1.4 TFSI
Audi Q2 1.4 TFSI 2016-2019
Same body, EA211 petrol engine. No DPF or AdBlue worries but watch for water pump and thermostat housing leaks. DQ200 S tronic is less reliable than the Q2 TDI's DQ381.
Audi A1 1.6 TDI 8X
Audi A1 1.6 TDI 8X 2010-2018
Smaller Audi diesel. Same DPF and EGR sensitivities but with older EA189/EA288 engines. Cheaper to buy but less refined.
