Audi's compact electric SUV on the Volkswagen Group MEB platform, shared with the ID.4, Enyaq, and Cupra Born. The 45 quattro combines a 150 kW rear permanent-magnet motor with a 70 kW (pre-MY24) or 80 kW (MY24+) front induction motor for all-wheel drive. Pre-MY24 cars produce 195 kW (265 hp), while the September 2023 update raised output to 210 kW (286 hp). A spacious, well-built electric crossover with a 92% first-time TUV pass rate, though MEB software maturity and 12V system management remain the main ownership irritations.

Buy if: You want a well-built electric SUV with AWD and can verify the software has been updated to version 3.2+ and all recalls are completed.
Avoid if: You need consistently fast DC charging in cold climates or are uncomfortable with the MEB platform's software track record on pre-2023 cars.

Common Problems
MMI display freezes, goes black, or reboots mid-drive, disabling climate and reversing camera · more· less
The most commonly reported Q4 e-tron issue. The MIB3-based MMI system can freeze, display a black screen, or spontaneously reboot while driving. When this happens, climate controls, navigation, and the reversing camera become unavailable. Early production cars (2021-2022) are most affected. Audi has issued multiple software updates, with version 3.2 being notably more stable. A temporary fix is holding the volume knob for 10-15 seconds to force a reboot. If the MIB3 hardware unit itself fails, out-of-warranty replacement costs around €1,200-1,500. Most issues are resolved through free dealer software updates. Cars with software version 3.2 or later are significantly more reliable in this regard.
12V battery drains when parked; 2024+ models affected by DC/DC converter recall · more· less
The MEB platform has a known 12V battery management weakness. Early Q4 e-trons (2021-2022) had an undersized 12V battery that could drain within 7-14 days if the car sat unused, causing a complete inability to start. Audi upgraded to an EFB battery from mid-2022. Separately, 2024-2025 models are affected by recall 93FR: condensation inside the Bosch-manufactured onboard charger (OCDC) damages a circuit board, preventing the DC/DC converter from charging the 12V battery. The revised part entered production in June 2024. Battery replacement costs €200-350. DC/DC converter replacement under recall is free; out of warranty, expect €500-800. A trickle charger is recommended if the car sits unused for more than 10 days.
Charge port flap sticks closed due to actuator motor failure from water ingress or corrosion · more· less
A common issue across the MEB e-tron range. Water intrusion causes corrosion in the actuator motor or connector, preventing the charge port flap from opening. When this happens, charging is impossible until the flap is manually freed. The actuator itself costs around €80 and the port insert about €30, but the lock mechanism must be broken to access the failed part, raising total repair cost to €150-400 depending on the workshop. In cold climates, ice formation worsens the problem. A magnetic charging port cover can help prevent water ingress. This affects all MEB-platform vehicles to some degree.
CO2 heat pump loses refrigerant through high-pressure connections, reducing winter range · more· less
Q4 e-trons equipped with the optional heat pump use an R744 (CO2) system operating at over 100 bar. Small leaks through hose connections are common over time, gradually reducing heating performance and winter range. Note that some Q4 e-trons delivered in 2022-2023 received a resistive heater instead of a heat pump due to semiconductor shortages. For cars with the heat pump, the official maintenance interval for R744 refrigerant is every 4 years. Recharging costs €130-200, but if seals or hoses need replacement the cost rises to €400-600. Not every workshop has the specialist R744 equipment (which costs around €15,000), so this typically requires a dealer visit.
Metallic knocking from the front end over bumps, caused by worn anti-roll bar drop links · more· less
A well-documented MEB platform issue that also affects the Q4 e-tron. The front anti-roll bar coupling links develop play, creating a metallic clunk or rattle when driving over bumps and potholes. This typically appears between 15,000-30,000 km and is more pronounced in cold weather. Audi has released a technical service bulletin. Replacement parts are inexpensive (€30-60 per link), with total repair costing €150-250 at an independent garage or €250-400 at an Audi dealer. Covered under warranty if still within the 2-year period.
Coolant seal failure allows fluid into the rear motor, requiring motor replacement · more· less
A known issue on MEB and older e-tron platform vehicles. The rear motor uses a mechanical seal that by design allows a very small amount of coolant seepage for lubrication. In rare cases (estimated under 2% of vehicles), this seal fails more substantially, allowing coolant to enter the motor and cause damage requiring complete motor replacement. This issue was more commonly reported on the older e-tron 55/Q8 e-tron, but isolated cases exist on Q4 models. Audi issued a service action (19Q9) for electric motor sealing ring assembly on some 2023 vehicles. Out-of-warranty motor replacement costs €4,000-8,000 including labor. Within the 8-year drivetrain warranty, this is covered at no cost.
Keyless entry works intermittently due to moisture-related connector corrosion in door handles · more· less
Several Q4 e-tron owners report that the keyless entry system works inconsistently, particularly after the car has been parked for extended periods. The cause is typically moisture-related corrosion in the plug connections where wiring meets the door handle assembly. Repair involves replacing the faulty connector and resealing the door electronics housing. The door handle sensor module costs around €100-150, with total repair running €200-500 depending on whether one or multiple handles are affected. The issue is worsened by frequent rain exposure and car washing.
Well-built EV with MEB platform software growing pains
The Q4 e-tron 45 quattro benefits from Audi's build quality, achieving a 92% first-time TUV pass rate, above average for the segment. The electric motors and battery pack are mechanically robust, with very few catastrophic powertrain failures reported. However, the MEB software platform shared with the VW ID.4, Skoda Enyaq, and Cupra Born brings familiar teething problems: infotainment instability, 12V battery management, and charging inconsistencies. Cars built from late 2023 onward with software version 3.2+ are notably more stable. The 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty provides good coverage for the most expensive component.
