2020-presentLast reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2020-present · 2.0 TDI EA288 evo (116 hp) 4-cylinder turbodiesel

The entry-level diesel in the current A3 generation. The 30 TDI uses the proven EA288 evo 2.0-litre four-cylinder at a modest 116 hp, paired with either a 6-speed manual or 7-speed S tronic. Built on the MQB evo platform shared with the Golf Mk8 and SEAT Leon Mk4, it offers strong fuel economy and refined long-distance cruising. The engine itself is mechanically solid, but the digital-heavy platform introduced notable infotainment and electronics teething problems on early production cars.

Proven EA288 evo diesel engine Excellent fuel economy (4.3-5.0 l/100 km)
Buggy MMI infotainment (early cars) DPF clogs on short-trip use
Buy if: You drive long distances regularly and can find a 2022+ model with updated software and complete Audi service history.
Avoid if: You mostly do short urban trips (DPF clogging) or want an early 2020-2021 car without confirmed software updates.

Common Problems
Solid diesel engine, but early electronics need verification
The EA288 evo 2.0 TDI is mechanically one of the most refined diesel engines in the Volkswagen Group lineup. Major engine failures are rare, and the 116 hp tune operates well within its limits. The real risks on the A3 8Y come from the digital-heavy MQB evo platform: the MMI infotainment, S tronic mechatronics, and driver assistance sensors are the main cost concerns. In the What Car? survey, 59% of owners reported faults within two years, with infotainment accounting for the largest share. Cars built from mid-2022 onward are significantly more reliable. Manual gearbox versions avoid the S tronic risk entirely.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Passenger occupant detection system (PODS) sensor mat malfunction - may switch off passenger airbag when seat is occupied (2020 models) Verify completed
Front seat belt tensioner retention force inadequate (manufactured 2018-Jan 2022, KBA ref 012007) Critical - verify completed
Front passenger airbag incorrectly folded (2022 A3/S3/RS3) Verify completed
Infotainment main unit failure causing inoperative rearview camera (2021-2022 models) Verify completed
Occupant detection system electrical connection loosening in front passenger seat (2023 models) Verify completed
The Audi A3 8Y has had several safety recalls in its first years of production. Contact an Audi dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The seat belt tensioner recall is particularly important as it affects occupant safety in a crash.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on 2020-2023 models, may apply to 2024+
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all A3 8Y models
Extended warranty Available through Audi dealers
Most used A3 8Y 30 TDI models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Audi occasionally offers goodwill repairs on known software issues. The 12-year rust perforation warranty covers all 8Y models. Extended warranty packages are available through Audi dealers and are worth considering for S tronic-equipped cars.

Audi A3 8V 1.4 TFSI e-tron 2014-2020 Previous-generation plug-in hybrid. Different drivetrain concerns: high-voltage battery degradation and complex hybrid system. Diesel is simpler long-term. Volkswagen Golf Mk8 2.0 TDI 2020-present Same engine and platform, identical reliability profile. Golf has the same MIB3/MMI bugs and DSG concerns. Audi costs slightly more to service. SEAT Leon Mk4 2.0 TDI 2020-present Mechanically identical, same issues. SEAT's smaller dealer network can complicate warranty and recall work. Audi A3 8P 2.0 TDI 2003-2013 Older generation with the earlier EA188/EA189 diesel. More EGR and turbo issues, but simpler electronics with no infotainment problems. Audi A4 B9 2.0 TDI 2015-2023 Larger car with the same EA288 family engine. Higher service costs due to size, but more mature electronics than the 8Y platform.
