2007-2012 · 4.2L FSI V8 CAUA (354 hp) naturally aspirated petrol

The original S5 launched the A5/S5 lineup with a characterful 4.2-litre naturally aspirated V8. The CAUA engine produces 354 hp and revs to 7,000 rpm, paired with quattro all-wheel drive and a choice of 6-speed manual or 6-speed Tiptronic automatic. It was offered exclusively as a coupe (2007-2012) before being replaced by the supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6 in the B8.5 facelift. Parts are shared with the RS4/RS5 B8 engine family, making specialist knowledge and aftermarket support widely available.

Carbon buildup from direct injection Cooling system requires attention
Buy if: You want a naturally aspirated V8 coupe with Audi's quattro system and can budget for carbon cleaning and attentive maintenance.
Avoid if: You need low running costs or are considering a car with unknown service history and no evidence of carbon cleaning.

Common Problems
Characterful V8 that requires attentive maintenance
The 4.2 FSI V8 in the B8 S5 is a significant improvement over the earlier B6/B7 generation's timing chain problems, and many examples exceed 150,000 km without major powertrain failures. However, the direct injection system guarantees carbon buildup will need periodic cleaning, and the cooling system, engine mounts, and oil seals all require attention as the car ages. Manual gearbox cars have a well-documented clutch durability issue. The Tiptronic automatic is the more reliable transmission choice. Budget for specialist maintenance and prioritize cars with complete service history.
