Entry-level version of Audi's first fully electric SUV, sharing the MLB evo-based platform with the 55 quattro. The 50 quattro uses a smaller 71 kWh battery (64.7 kWh usable) with dual asynchronous motors producing 230 kW combined. Real-world range is around 250-290 km. Renamed Q8 e-tron for 2023. The smaller battery makes it cheaper to buy used but the mechanical architecture and known issues mirror the 55 almost exactly.

Common Problems
Rotor shaft seal deteriorates, allowing coolant into the motor housing and requiring full motor replacement · more· less
The most serious known issue affecting approximately 2% of e-trons, particularly 2019-2021 builds. The rotor shaft seal separating the coolant circuit from the motor's electrical components can fail, allowing coolant to seep into the motor housing and destroy the windings within minutes. The seal design is similar to a pool pump seal (ceramic and graphite pressed together by a spring), and heat-induced coolant deposits are suspected as the root cause. Once coolant enters the motor, the entire unit must be replaced as the seal cannot be serviced independently. Failures typically occur between 10,000-30,000 km but can happen at any mileage. Audi extended the motor warranty to 10 years / 190,000 km in the USA, but this extension does not apply to European-market vehicles, which retain only the standard 2-year warranty. Some European owners have obtained goodwill coverage, but this is not guaranteed. Check the small plastic catch reservoir next to each motor during inspection: it should be empty. Any coolant present indicates an active leak. Because the 50 uses the same motors as the 55 (detuned by software), the risk applies equally.
LG Energy Solution E61V battery modules can self-discharge and overheat, creating a fire risk · more· less
Approximately 26,866 vehicles with LG Energy Solution E61V battery modules manufactured before March 2022 are affected by recall 93U9. A potentially critical self-discharge condition can lead to thermal overload, possibly resulting in smoke or fire. The recall instructs dealers to install diagnostic software that monitors battery module performance and to replace affected modules where necessary, free of charge. Pending the fix, owners were advised to limit charging to 80%. Vehicles built from March 2022 onward use Samsung SDI cells and are not affected. Verify recall status with Audi using the VIN before purchase. The repair itself is covered under the recall, but an unremedied car may be uninsurable in some markets and has reduced resale value. Because the 50 quattro was only produced from 2019 through early 2022, almost all examples on the used market are affected.
Standard air suspension compressor fails or air springs develop leaks, causing ride height faults · more· less
The e-tron 50 quattro has adaptive air suspension as standard equipment, identical to the 55. The compressor can fail (particularly on pre-July 2019 builds with the less durable first-generation unit), causing the car to sag on all corners with a 'Suspension malfunction' warning. Audi released a revised compressor and updated software in August 2023 to improve control unit communication. Individual air struts can also develop leaks, particularly in cold or damp conditions, causing one corner to sag. Compressor replacement costs approximately €950-1,200, while a single air strut runs €1,200-1,800. The system shares components with the Audi Q7 and Volkswagen Touareg, so parts availability is good. Regular use (rather than extended parking) helps maintain seal condition.
Faulty seal allows moisture into the HV charging connector, risking short circuit · more· less
Audi recalled early 2019 models (recall 93E8) for a seal behind the charging connector that allowed water to seep along the HV cable into the battery. The recall involved installing a new seal and, where necessary, replacing affected components. Despite the recall, some owners report ongoing water ingress through the charging port door area on later models as well, which can cause intermittent charging failures or error messages. If the seal has been replaced under recall, the residual risk is low. For 2019 build cars, verify the recall was completed. Repair costs for charging port components range from €800-2,200 if not covered under recall. This applies to both 50 and 55 quattro variants built in 2019.
12V battery drains flat within 1-2 weeks if the car is not driven or plugged in · more· less
A common issue across the e-tron range and many other EVs. The 12V battery powers all ancillary systems and can drain within 7-14 days if the car is not driven or plugged in. The DC-DC converter that charges the 12V from the HV battery only operates when the car is in Ready mode or during HV charging. The myAudi app regularly polls the vehicle, accelerating drain. When the 12V dies, the car becomes completely unresponsive despite a fully charged HV battery. Replacement costs €150-350 plus potential towing charges. Keeping the car plugged in or using a trickle charger during extended parking prevents the issue. Audi has released software updates on later production cars to reduce standby drain.
Dual touchscreens freeze, go black, or become unresponsive, requiring forced reboots · more· less
Owners widely report intermittent MMI freezing, delayed touchscreen responsiveness, Bluetooth connectivity drops, and complete system crashes requiring reboots. The system can display 'User information is loading' messages that persist indefinitely. A quick fix is holding the power/volume knob until both screens turn off. For persistent issues, a full system reboot (lock car, walk away with all keys for one hour) can help. Audi has released multiple software updates, but some dealers report that major updates can take a full day, occasionally requiring replacement of the control unit (€800-1,500). The 2022 model year cars received significant software stability improvements. Confirming all updates are applied before purchase is important.
Camera-based side mirrors fog up internally, reducing visibility and triggering safety warnings · more· less
The optional virtual mirrors (camera-based side mirrors) on early e-trons lack heating elements, causing internal condensation that degrades video quality, particularly at night and in cold or damp conditions. Symptoms include 'Visibility reduced' warnings and 'Assistance systems not available' errors. Replacement costs approximately €500-600 per camera unit at a dealer. Many owners report needing 2-3 replacements on the same side. The updated Q8 e-tron cameras have heating elements connected to the rear window heater. A workaround is holding the heated rear window button for several seconds to activate permanent heating in cold weather. Cars with conventional mirrors are not affected. Virtual mirrors were a rare option on the 50 quattro — most were sold with conventional mirrors.
Solid EV platform with one serious known weakness
The e-tron 50 quattro shares its platform, motors, and most systems with the 55, so the reliability profile is nearly identical. Battery degradation data shows only 5-7% loss at 50,000-80,000 km. The motor coolant seal issue is the biggest concern: while it affects only around 2% of cars, the repair cost is severe and European buyers lack the extended motor warranty US owners received. The LG battery recall affects essentially every 50 quattro because production ended before the Samsung cell switchover. Air suspension and 12V drain issues are manageable if verified. Budget for the air suspension and 12V battery as recurring items, and verify all recall work before buying.

Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, no km limit)
Expired on all used e-trons
HV battery warranty (8 years / 160,000 km)
Covers capacity below 70%. Check remaining coverage by VIN.
Motor warranty (EU)
Standard 2 years only. No EU extension (US got 10 years / 190,000 km).
Rust perforation warranty (12 years)
May still be active depending on build date
All used e-tron 50 quattros are outside the standard 2-year factory warranty. The HV battery retains 8-year / 160,000 km coverage against falling below 70% capacity. Critically, Audi extended the electric motor warranty to 10 years in the USA but this does not apply to European-market vehicles. Some owners have obtained goodwill motor repairs, but this is discretionary. Consider third-party EV warranty coverage if purchasing outside battery warranty.
