Audi A8 2.8 D2

1994-2002Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

1994-2002 · 2.8 V6 30V (174-193 hp) naturally aspirated petrol

The first-generation Audi A8 introduced the aluminium Space Frame to production luxury cars, making it notably lighter than steel-bodied rivals. The 2.8 V6 is the entry-level engine, available in both front-wheel drive and quattro, paired with a 5-speed automatic or rare 5-speed manual. It offered relaxed cruising in a full-size sedan at a fraction of the cost of the 4.2 V8 variant. Today these are deeply depreciated, with the V6 engine regarded as robust but the ageing electronics and drivetrain demanding informed ownership.

Age-related electrical gremlins Automatic transmission fragile long-term
Buy if: You want an affordable aluminium-bodied luxury sedan and can find one with documented service history, functioning electrics, and a healthy automatic transmission.
Avoid if: You need trouble-free ownership or cannot budget for specialist repairs on a 20+ year old luxury car with limited parts availability.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but age demands informed ownership
The 2.8 V6 engine itself is considered one of the most reliable powerplants Audi has produced, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km without major internal failures. The main concerns are around the automatic transmission (preventable with regular fluid changes), age-related oil leaks, and the complex electronics and pneumatic systems of a 1990s luxury flagship. Owners who maintain these cars proactively report modest running costs, but deferred maintenance quickly escalates repair bills.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Airbag inadvertent deployment due to static electricity (1995-1996 models) Verify completed
Front suspension track control link ball joint boot damage (models built before Dec 1999) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (1998-2001 models, campaign 69AE/69CJ) Critical - verify completed
Contact Audi with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly important as inflator rupture can cause serious injury.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all D2 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all D2 models (aluminium body)
All Audi A8 D2 models are well outside any factory warranty coverage. The aluminium body construction means rust perforation is rarely an issue, but panel repairs after damage are expensive due to the specialist welding required.

Audi A8 3.0 TDI D3 2003-2010 Next generation with air suspension and more complex electronics. Lower fuel costs but air suspension and timing chain issues add significant risk. BMW 750i G11 2015-2022 Much newer luxury flagship with higher running costs. V8 complexity and air suspension make this substantially more expensive to maintain. Volkswagen Passat 1.8T B5 1996-2005 Same era, shared platform DNA. Smaller and simpler but 1.8T has its own oil sludge issues. Lower purchase and maintenance costs overall. Audi A8 50 TDI D5 2017-present Current generation with 48V mild hybrid. Far more complex with air suspension, dual touchscreens, and sensor-heavy systems. Higher running costs. Audi A3 1.8T 8L 1996-2003 Same era Audi with the 1.8T engine. Much smaller and cheaper to run, but the turbo engine has more potential failure points than the naturally aspirated 2.8 V6.
