The 508 Mk1 was Peugeot's mid-size contender against the Passat, Mondeo, and Insignia. The pre-facelift 2.0 HDi uses the DW10BTED4 (140 hp) or DW10CTED4 (163 hp) engine, a proven PSA/Ford diesel that has seen service in millions of vehicles across both brands. Without AdBlue injection, the emissions system is simpler than the later BlueHDi. Regular motorway use is important to keep the DPF healthy.· more· less

Proven DW10 engine, 300k+ km capable No AdBlue system (simpler than BlueHDi)
Rear subframe bushings wear early Electronic parking brake unreliable
Buy if: You want an affordable diesel cruiser for regular motorway commuting and can find one with a complete service history and no DPF warning history.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF clogging) or want trouble-free electrics (parking brake and infotainment are weak points).

Common Problems
Proven engine, but diesel ancillaries and electrics need attention
The DW10 2.0 HDi engine is fundamentally durable and well-proven across multiple manufacturer platforms, with some examples exceeding 300,000 km. Most ownership concerns centre on the emissions system (DPF clogging from urban driving), rear subframe bushings, and the electronic parking brake. The pre-facelift HDi avoids the AdBlue system complexity found on later BlueHDi models, making the emissions side somewhat simpler. Cars with regular motorway use and complete service history present significantly lower risk than those used primarily for short trips.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Starter relay internal component fault (selected 2010-2013 production) Verify completed
Starter power cable incorrectly routed near EGR valve, risk of short circuit (selected 2011-2012 production) Verify completed
Timing belt premature wear in dusty conditions (Apr 2015 - Apr 2018 production, campaign KLZ) Critical - verify completed
Airbag ignition module may not deploy in a collision (selected production periods) Verify completed
Fuel pipe routing may cause leak (selected 2011-2012 production) Verify completed
The Peugeot 508 Mk1 has been recalled multiple times. The timing belt recall (campaign KLZ, affecting April 2015 to April 2018 production) is particularly important as premature belt failure can destroy the engine. The starter relay recall affects early production cars and can cause unexpected starter motor engagement. Contact a Peugeot dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all 508 Mk1 HDi models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
Extended warranty Available through Peugeot dealers and third-party providers
All pre-facelift 508 HDi models (2010-2014) are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still cover the bodyshell on later production cars. Third-party extended warranties are available but often exclude diesel emissions components.

Volkswagen Passat B7 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Passat B7 2.0 TDI 2010-2014
Direct competitor. More refined interior. EA189 TDI has its own DPF and EGR concerns. Shares similar electronic parking brake issues.
Ford Mondeo Mk4 2.0 TDCi
Ford Mondeo Mk4 2.0 TDCi 2007-2014
Same DW10 engine co-developed with PSA. Mondeo has trailing arm bush issues instead of subframe bushings. Cheaper parts availability.
Peugeot 508 1.5 BlueHDi Mk2
Peugeot 508 1.5 BlueHDi Mk2 2018-2024
Successor generation with smaller DV5 engine. Better interior and technology, but known for a serious timing chain recall on early production.
Skoda Superb Mk2 2.0 TDI
Skoda Superb Mk2 2.0 TDI 2008-2015
More spacious. EA189 TDI is reliable but has DPF differential pressure sensor and injector seal issues on higher-mileage examples.
