The hottest factory 206, sitting above the 138 hp GTi with a reworked 2.0 16V producing 177 hp through variable valve timing and revised intake and exhaust. Sold as the GTi 180 in the UK, the RC added bucket seats, a close-ratio gearbox, stiffer suspension, and 17-inch wheels. Mechanically it shares the 206's well-known platform weaknesses, with an engine that is fundamentally the same EW10 family found across many PSA models. Survival rates are lower than the standard GTi because these were driven hard, so condition and history matter enormously.· more· less

Common Problems
Engine is solid but the chassis shows its age
The EW10J4S 2.0 16V is a fundamentally sound engine that can exceed 200,000 km when properly maintained. Ownership costs on the 206 RC are driven primarily by the chassis and platform weak points shared with all 206 models: rear axle bearings, BSI electrical gremlins, corrosion, and suspension wear. The RC's stiffer setup and harder driving life mean these items tend to appear sooner. A well-documented car with a recently refreshed rear axle and tidy bodywork can be an affordable and rewarding hot hatch to run. A neglected example will quickly consume more in repairs than its purchase price.

Peugeot 206 GTi Mk1
Peugeot 206 GTi Mk1 1999-2003
Same platform, lower-output EW10J4 engine (138 hp). Identical rear axle, BSI, and rust problems. Cheaper to buy and slightly cheaper consumables with smaller tires.
Renault Clio RS 2.0 Mk2
Renault Clio RS 2.0 Mk2 1998-2005
Direct French hot hatch rival. The Clio 172/182 has gearbox and dephaser issues instead of rear axle problems. Rust can be worse on Phase 1 cars.
Ford Fiesta ST Mk7
Ford Fiesta ST Mk7 2013-2017
A decade newer with similar spirit. More reliable overall, but pre-2015 cars have a cylinder head recall. Higher purchase price for a much newer car.
Peugeot 207 GTi
Peugeot 207 GTi 2007-2012
Successor with the BMW/PSA 1.6 THP turbo. More power but considerably less reliable. Timing chain, HPFP, and turbo failures are widespread.
Peugeot 206 1.6 Mk1
Peugeot 206 1.6 Mk1 1998-2009
Same platform, milder engine. All the same chassis weak points but less suspension and clutch wear from calmer driving. Cheaper tires and brakes.
