The first-generation Peugeot 308 replaced the 307 and became a popular compact across Europe. The 1.6 VTi uses the naturally aspirated version of the BMW/PSA Prince engine (EP6C), producing 120 hp. It is a simpler, more predictable engine than its turbocharged THP sibling, but it still shares the timing chain and cooling system weaknesses of the EP6 family. Parts are affordable and widely available.· more· less

Cheap parts, widely available Simpler than turbocharged THP
EP6 timing chain still a concern Cooling system prone to leaks
Buy if: You want an affordable compact with a simpler petrol engine and can find one with documented oil changes every 10,000-15,000 km and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: The car has unknown service history, audible chain rattle on cold start, or is fitted with the AL4 automatic gearbox and shows harsh shifting.

Common Problems
Less troublesome than the THP, but EP6 weaknesses remain
The 1.6 VTi is a significantly less problematic engine than its turbocharged THP sibling, avoiding the high-pressure fuel pump, turbo, and carbon buildup issues. However, it still shares the EP6 family's timing chain and cooling system weaknesses. Manual gearbox models are more reliable than those with the AL4 automatic. Regular oil changes every 10,000-15,000 km (not the extended intervals PSA originally recommended) and monitoring for cold-start rattle are essential. Cars with complete service history and owners who avoided only short trips tend to fare best.

Contact Peugeot with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Given the car's age, most recalls should have been addressed by now, but verify rather than assume. The Takata airbag recall is a global campaign still being completed on some vehicles.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all T7 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all T7 models
Extended warranty availability Third-party warranties available, check exclusions
All Peugeot 308 T7 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Third-party extended warranties are available but often exclude known problem areas like timing chains on the EP6 engine. Read exclusion clauses carefully before purchasing.
