The 207 was Peugeot's core supermini from 2006 to 2014, replacing the hugely popular 206. The 1.6 petrol came with two different engines depending on production date: early cars (2006-2007) use the older TU5JP4 with a timing belt, while later cars (2007 onward) received the EP6 Prince engine co-developed with BMW, which uses a timing chain and variable valve lift. The EP6 is the more common unit and the more troublesome of the two, sharing its known weak points with the Mini Cooper and Citroen DS3.· more· less

Common Problems
Two different engines, two different risk profiles
The 207 1.6's reliability depends heavily on which engine it has. Early TU5JP4 cars (2006-2007) use a simpler, belt-driven engine with fewer known issues. Later EP6 VTi cars (2007 onward) share the BMW/PSA Prince engine platform with its well-documented timing chain, oil consumption, and variable valve lift problems. Both variants share the 207's common electrical weaknesses, particularly the electric power steering system and ECU water damage vulnerability. Cars with the AL4 automatic gearbox add another layer of risk. A manual-gearbox TU5JP4 car with a documented timing belt history represents the lowest-risk option.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Seat heater fire risk (June 2009 - May 2015 production) Critical - verify completed
Rear brake hose abrasion against suspension spring Verify completed
Track rod end ball joint incorrect torque Verify completed
Battery earth cable too short, potential engine cut-out Verify completed
Crankshaft machining defect, risk of engine seizure Verify completed
The Peugeot 207 has had 18 safety recalls issued over its production life. Contact a Peugeot dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The seat heater recall is particularly important as it poses a fire risk even when the car is parked.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all 207s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to late-production cars (2012-2014)
Extended warranty Third-party options available, verify exclusions carefully
All Peugeot 207s are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Given the car's age, third-party extended warranty providers may exclude known problem areas like the power steering system and timing chain.
