1998-2003 · 1.1 TU1JP 8V (60 hp) 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol

The entry-level petrol version of one of Europe's best-selling superminis, with the 1.1-litre TU1JP delivering modest 60 hp for stress-free urban driving. Sold mainly between 1998 and 2003 as the cheapest 206, it shares its platform with the 1.4 but uses a smaller, simpler engine that is inexpensive to maintain. Parts availability is excellent and most shops can service the car without specialist tools, making it one of the cheapest cars to keep running in Europe.

Buy if: You want the absolute cheapest way to stay mobile and can accept the quirks and age-related wear of a 20+ year-old supermini.
Avoid if: You regularly drive on motorways or carry passengers, as the 60 hp engine feels underpowered outside urban settings.

Common Problems
Simple and cheap to repair, but every car shows its age
The Peugeot 206 1.1 is one of the cheapest cars to own and repair in Europe. The TU1JP engine has a proven record of exceeding 200,000 km with routine maintenance, and most individual failures are cheap to address. The real risk on a 20+ year-old car is accumulated wear — rear axle bearings, electrical corrosion, body rust, and tired plastic trim often add up to more than the car is worth. A well-looked-after example is excellent value; a neglected one is a money pit relative to its low market price.
