The 206 GTi 138 is the original 2.0 16V hot hatch version of Peugeot's late-1990s supermini, sold as the spiritual successor to the 205 GTi. Power comes from the EW10J4 — a naturally aspirated, port-injected 2.0 16V also used in the 307 and many Citroens — paired with a five-speed manual. The chassis is basically a 206 with stiffer suspension and bigger brakes, so the 206's well-known weaknesses (rear trailing arm bearings, BSI electrics, sill rust) all apply. Most cars are now budget enthusiast machines and condition varies wildly; service history matters more than price.· more· less

Robust port-injected 2.0 16V Cheap parts, simple mechanics
Rear axle bearings always rot BSI and switchgear electrics fragile
Buy if: You want a cheap, lively old-school hot hatch with a naturally aspirated engine and complete service records.
Avoid if: You need a low-maintenance daily driver — every surviving 206 GTi will need rear axle, suspension, and electrical attention sooner rather than later.

Common Problems
Engine is solid; everything else needs watching
The EW10J4 2.0 16V is a long-running PSA engine without major design flaws — it's the chassis and electrics that drive ownership cost. Rear axle bearings, BSI gremlins, sill rust, and worn front suspension are essentially universal at this age. A well-bought, well-documented car can be cheap and rewarding to run; a tired example will quickly outspend its purchase price.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front suspension lower arm ball joint (early 2000-2001 build) Verify completed
Brake pedal clevis pin retaining clip (selected build dates) Verify completed
Windscreen wiper mechanism failure Verify completed
Contact a Peugeot dealer with the VIN to confirm all factory recalls have been completed — most 206 recalls are old, but completion records are not always carried over with private sales.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired
Rust perforation warranty Expired
Used car warranty Sometimes available via dealer (3-12 months)
All 206 GTi Mk1 examples are long out of factory and rust warranty. A short used-car warranty from a dealer can cover the BSI and rear axle but rarely covers rust or wear items — read the small print.

↔ Also consider

Peugeot 206 1.6
Peugeot 206 1.6 1998-2009
Same chassis, same weak points (rear axle, BSI, rust). The 1.6 NFU is calmer and slightly cheaper to run, but the GTi's larger engine is no less reliable.
Peugeot 207 GTi
Peugeot 207 GTi 2007-2012
Successor with the BMW/PSA 1.6 THP turbo. Faster but considerably less reliable — timing chain, HPFP, and turbo failures are widespread.
Renault Clio II 1.2
Renault Clio II 1.2 2001-2012
Direct era rival. Less power but similar fragility — Clio II has its own coil pack and wiring loom problems instead of rear axle bearings.
Peugeot 208 GTi
Peugeot 208 GTi 2013-2019
Two generations newer with the 1.6 THP turbo. Sharper to drive but the EP6 engine has known timing chain and HPFP issues the 206 GTi simply does not have.
Peugeot 206 1.4
Peugeot 206 1.4 1998-2009
Cheap, simple base 206. Less fun than the GTi, but the 1.4 8V engine is lighter on consumables and the smaller brakes and tires cost less to replace.
