The Peugeot 207 uses an electric power steering system that is widely reported to fail. The EPS warning light appears and steering becomes very heavy, sometimes intermittently at first before becoming permanent. The failure is typically in the EPS motor itself or the integrated control unit. Peugeot acknowledged this as a known defect and many cases were repaired under extended goodwill warranty, but all 207s are now well outside any warranty period. A refurbished EPS unit costs around €400-500, while a new OEM replacement with fitting runs to €700-900. Specialist repair services that rebuild the existing unit are available for €250-400, which is the most cost-effective route.

The engine ECU on the 207 1.4 is susceptible to water damage. Coolant can travel via capillary action up the wiring harness connector into the ECU, causing corrosion on the circuit board. Symptoms include anti-pollution fault messages, overheat warning light illuminating despite normal temperatures, engine cutting out at idle, and erratic running. ECU repair by a specialist typically costs €250-350. If the ECU needs full replacement and coding, costs rise to €800-1,200. Early detection of green coolant residue on the ECU connector is key. Check the connector during any pre-purchase inspection.

The TU3 engine has a known tendency for the cylinder head gasket to develop an external oil leak. Peugeot acknowledged this as a recognized fault on the 1.4 8v. In most cases, the leak is external only and does not contaminate the coolant, so many owners live with it for years. However, if neglected and coolant mixing occurs, engine overheating and serious damage can follow. Repair at an independent garage typically costs €500-700 including parts and labor (4-5 hours). A dealer repair runs to €800-1,000. The gasket itself costs only €20-40, so the bill is almost entirely labor.

Ignition coil pack failure is a common issue on the 207 1.4 petrol. Symptoms include a noticeable misfire, rough idle, hesitation during acceleration, and the anti-pollution fault message appearing on the dashboard. The coil pack itself is inexpensive (€40-80) and replacement is straightforward, but if ignored, misfires can damage the catalytic converter, which is a much more expensive repair. It is advisable to replace spark plugs at the same time. Total repair including a coil pack and spark plugs costs €150-350 depending on the workshop.

The electric window regulators on the 207 use a Temic controller module that is vulnerable to water ingress. When it fails, the window either stops working entirely or behaves erratically (moving on its own or not responding). Peugeot dealers replace the entire assembly (€200-400 fitted), but independent garages and DIY owners can often replace just the faulty Temic module for €50-100. Rear windows are affected more frequently than fronts. The problem typically appears after 70,000-90,000 km.

The thermostat housing and associated coolant hoses on the TU3 engine can develop leaks over time, particularly on cars over 10 years old. A stuck thermostat prevents proper coolant circulation and can lead to rapid overheating. Symptoms include erratic temperature gauge readings, coolant loss requiring frequent top-ups, and the heater blowing cold air. Broken coil springs are a known issue across Peugeot models including the 207, particularly on cars driven in regions where road salt is used.
