The first-generation 308 replaced the long-running 307 and sold well across Europe as an affordable compact. The 1.4 VTi uses the naturally aspirated version of the BMW/PSA co-developed Prince engine, producing a modest 95 hp. It is simpler and less failure-prone than the turbocharged 1.6 THP variant, with no turbo, no high-pressure fuel pump, and lower thermal stress. Parts are cheap and widely available.· more· less

Buy if: You want an affordable compact for mixed driving and can find one with complete service history showing regular oil changes and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: You hear chain rattle on cold start, the service history is incomplete, or you need motorway performance from this modest 95 hp engine.

Common Problems
Simpler than the THP, but the Prince engine family has known weaknesses
The 1.4 VTi avoids the turbo-related failures of the 1.6 THP, making it the more reliable Prince engine choice. However, it shares the timing chain design, and adds the VVL system as a potential failure point. Electrical issues (BSI, EPS) are platform-level concerns affecting all T7 308 variants. With regular oil changes, timing chain monitoring, and attention to electrical health, the 1.4 VTi can provide decent long-term service. Budget for preventive timing chain work around 100,000 km.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Bonnet latch weld failure (2007-2010 production) Verify completed
Front right shock absorber upper mounting not correctly tightened (2007-2009 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (various 2007-2013 production dates) Verify completed
Contact a Peugeot dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The bonnet latch recall on early cars is particularly important to confirm.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all T7 308 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired or expiring on all T7 models
All Peugeot 308 T7 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty has expired on most cars. Extended warranties from third-party providers may be available but typically exclude known pre-existing faults.
