2006-2014Last updated: March 2026

2006-2014 · 1.2L 4-cylinder petrol Z12XEP (80 hp) / A12XER (86 hp)

One of Europe's best-selling city cars, the Corsa D with its 1.2 petrol engine is a popular choice for new drivers and urban commuters. Two engine variants were used: the Z12XEP (2006-2010, 80 hp) and the updated A12XER (2010-2014, 86 hp with variable cam timing). Parts are cheap and widely available, making it an affordable car to own if major issues are avoided.

Opel Corsa D 1.4 2006-2014 Same platform, slightly more power. Shares timing chain and EPS issues. The 1.4 also has vacuum pump fire risk on turbo models. Renault Clio III 1.2 16V 2005-2012 Similar segment and price. Clio uses a timing belt instead of chain, avoiding that issue, but has its own electrical gremlins. Peugeot 206 1.4 1998-2012 Older but simpler design with fewer electrical problems. Generally cheaper to maintain but poorer build quality. Opel Corsa C 1.2 2000-2006 Previous generation with simpler technology. Fewer electronic issues but worse crash safety and comfort. Opel Corsa E 1.4 2014-2019 Successor generation. Improved build quality and revised EPS system. Still shares some timing chain concerns.
Known Issues most common first
Electric power steering column failure €200 - 1,200
Torque sensor wears out, causing intermittent or total loss of power steering assist · more· less
This is the most notorious Corsa D problem across all engine variants. The electric power steering (EPS) column contains a torque sensor that degrades with age and use. Symptoms include the EPS warning light, steering becoming heavy or unresponsive, and in some cases the steering wheel jumping or vibrating. The sensor cannot be replaced individually - the entire column must be swapped. A new OEM column from Opel costs over €1,000 plus programming, but remanufactured units with lifetime warranty are available for €200-350 fitted. Fault codes typically stored include C1002, C5002, and C0074. The issue can occur at any mileage but is most common after 80,000-120,000 km. The problem is so widespread that multiple aftermarket rebuild services exist specifically for this part.
Timing chain tensioner wear and chain stretch €500 - 1,500
Chain stretches and tensioner loses pressure, causing cold start rattle and risk of engine damage · more· less
Both the Z12XEP and A12XER engines use a timing chain that can stretch prematurely, particularly if oil changes are neglected or poor-quality oil is used. The tensioner bleeds off hydraulic pressure overnight, resulting in a distinctive rattle lasting 1-30 seconds on cold start. The A12XER (2010+) is somewhat improved but not immune. Typically occurs between 80,000-120,000 km. If ignored, the chain can skip teeth causing valve-piston contact and catastrophic engine damage. A full timing chain kit replacement (chain, tensioner, guides, sprockets) costs €500-800 at an independent workshop and €1,000-1,500 at an Opel dealer. The job takes 4-6 hours. Vauxhall updated the tensioner part number, so ensure the latest revision is fitted. Regular oil changes with quality oil are the best prevention.
Ignition coil pack failure €100 - 300
Coil pack degrades from heat and moisture, causing misfires and engine management light · more· less
The single coil pack unit on the 1.2 engine is prone to failure due to heat cycling making the plastic brittle and moisture corroding the internal spring contacts. Symptoms include engine management light, misfires (especially when cold), juddering, and sometimes limp mode that clears after restart. The corrosion often starts at cylinder 4. A replacement coil pack costs €50-100 for the part, with fitting taking under an hour. Spark plugs should be replaced at the same time. This is a common and relatively inexpensive repair, but the symptoms can be alarming if you do not know what is causing them.
Thermostat and cooling system issues €150 - 400
Thermostat sticks open or closed, causing overheating or poor cabin heating · more· less
The thermostat on the 1.2 engine tends to fail after 60,000-100,000 km. When it sticks open, the engine takes too long to warm up and cabin heating is poor. When it sticks closed, the engine can overheat. Replacement including the housing costs €150-250 at an independent garage. The radiator itself can also develop leaks, particularly at the plastic end tanks which become brittle with age. A new radiator costs €100-200 for the part. Coolant hoses should be inspected for cracking at every service.
Wheel bearing wear €150 - 350
Rear wheel bearings fail prematurely, especially with aftermarket wheels or lowered suspension · more· less
Rear wheel bearings on the Corsa D are known to wear faster than expected, particularly on cars with larger aftermarket wheels or lowered suspension. Symptoms are a humming or droning noise that changes with speed and disappears during turns in one direction. Bearings typically last 85,000-120,000 km under normal conditions. Rear bearings come as complete hub assemblies and are a straightforward bolt-on replacement. Parts cost €50-80 each, with labor around €100-150 per side. Front bearings are less commonly affected but cost more to replace due to press-fitting requirements.
Throttle body contamination €100 - 400
Carbon buildup causes irregular idle, hesitation, and poor throttle response · more· less
The electronic throttle body on the 1.2 engine accumulates carbon deposits over time, particularly with short-trip driving. This causes rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, and sometimes stalling. Cleaning the throttle body with dedicated cleaner resolves the issue in most cases (€50-100 at a workshop). If the throttle body motor or position sensor has failed internally, replacement costs €250-400. The issue typically appears after 80,000 km and recurs every 30,000-40,000 km if driving conditions are unfavorable.
Affordable to fix, but several known weak points
The Corsa D 1.2 is a cheap car to run when things go well, but the electric power steering column and timing chain are genuine reliability concerns. Both issues are well-documented with affordable aftermarket solutions available. The coil pack and thermostat are inexpensive repairs. Regular oil changes with quality oil are critical for timing chain longevity. Most issues are manageable if caught early, and parts availability is excellent across Europe.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 3 more checksShow less
  • Inspect coolant level and condition
Low coolant or discoloration suggests thermostat housing leak or radiator issues. Check for white residue around hoses.
  • Listen for wheel bearing noise during test drive
A droning hum that changes with speed suggests worn wheel bearings. Swerve gently left and right to isolate which side.
  • Verify all recalls have been completed
Multiple recalls exist for the Corsa D including steering, handbrake, and bonnet corrosion. Check with Opel using the VIN.
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering intermediate shaft insufficient strength (2007 production) Verify completed
Front suspension wishbone weld failure (2007 production) Verify completed
Passenger airbag cover may detach (April-May 2009 production) Verify completed
Handbrake lever may not latch correctly Verify completed
Bonnet corrosion from water ingress (2010-2012 models, 183,455 units affected) Verify completed
Steering system component not to specification (from May 2014 production) Verify completed
Knuckle arm production defect (2014 models, 6,824 units recalled in Germany) Verify completed
The Corsa D has had numerous recalls over its production run. Contact an Opel dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The steering and suspension recalls are particularly important for safety.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Corsa D models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on pre-2014 models
All Opel Corsa D models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. No extended warranty programs are currently available from Opel for this generation. Third-party warranty providers may offer coverage but exclusions for known issues like EPS and timing chain are common.
