Widely regarded as one of the best hot hatches of the 2000s, the Clio 172 and 182 combine a rev-happy naturally aspirated 2.0 16V F4R engine with a lightweight chassis and direct steering. Available in standard, Cup, and Trophy trims, these cars have a devoted following. The F4R engine is fundamentally strong and can reach 200,000+ km with proper maintenance. As these cars are now 20+ years old, structural condition and service history are more important than mileage.· more· less

Common Problems
Robust engine, but age and condition matter more than mileage
The F4R engine is widely considered one of Renault's most reliable performance units and many examples exceed 200,000 km without major internal work. The real ownership risks on a 2001-2005 car are age-related: structural rust, worn dephaser pulleys, gearbox synchro wear from hard use, and tired engine mounts. Finding a car with solid bodywork, documented cambelt/dephaser history, and a gearbox that does not crunch is far more important than finding one with low mileage. Well-maintained examples with proper rust prevention can be genuinely reliable.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front brake hose protector fitment (Clio II range, various production dates) Verify completed
Rear brake cylinder fluid leak potential (Clio II range) Verify completed
Brake servo air pressure sensor positioning (selected Clio II models) Verify completed
The Clio 172/182 was not sold in the US market, so NHTSA records do not apply. Contact Renault with the VIN to verify European recall status. Due to the age of these vehicles, some recall work may have been completed but documentation lost. A Renault dealer can check completion status electronically.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all cars
Rust perforation warranty Expired (was 6 years)
Extended warranty Not typically available for 20+ year old vehicles
All Clio 172 and 182 models are well beyond any manufacturer warranty. Extended warranty from third parties is extremely unlikely for vehicles of this age. A thorough pre-purchase inspection by a Renault Sport specialist is the best protection.
