The first modern Skoda Superb was built on a stretched VW Passat B5 platform, offering near-luxury interior space at a modest price. The 1.9 TDI Pumpe-Duse engine was available in 100 hp (AVB) and 130 hp (AVF/AWX) versions. Both use proven VAG diesel architecture capable of exceeding 300,000 km when properly maintained. Most Mk1 examples are Euro 3 without a DPF, which simplifies ownership for mixed driving patterns.· more· less

Common Problems
Solid diesel powertrain, but age-related wear needs monitoring
The 1.9 TDI PD engine in the Superb Mk1 has a proven track record for durability. The AVB and AVF engine codes are considered among the more reliable variants in the PD family. Most examples now have 15-20+ years on the road, so age-related issues (suspension bushings, electrics, corrosion) are the primary concern rather than catastrophic engine failure. Cars with documented service history, regular oil changes with correct specification oil, and timing belt replacements on schedule can still provide reliable daily transport.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (selected 2001-2008 production vehicles) Verify with VIN
Fuel system leak risk (early production vehicles, 2002-2004) Verify with VIN
The Mk1 Superb is old enough that most official recall campaigns have been completed. Contact Skoda with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been addressed. The Takata airbag recall is the most likely outstanding item on cars that have changed hands frequently.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk1 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all Mk1 models
All Superb Mk1 models are now well outside both their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Third-party warranty products for cars of this age are rarely available or cost-effective.
