2010-2014 · 1.2 TSI EA111 (86-105 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol

Budget-friendly Czech supermini sharing its platform and engine with the Volkswagen Polo 6R and SEAT Ibiza Mk4. The 1.2 TSI EA111 engine was available from 2010 in both 86 hp and 105 hp versions, offering a good balance of performance and economy. Parts are inexpensive, insurance is low, and the car is widely supported by independent workshops across Europe.

EA111 timing chain tensioner issues DQ200 DSG unreliable (if equipped)
Buy if: You want an affordable, practical supermini with a manual gearbox and can verify the timing chain has been replaced or is in good condition.
Avoid if: You are considering a DSG automatic variant, or find a pre-2012 example with cold-start rattle indicating timing chain stretch.

Common Problems
Timing chain and turbo need monitoring, but manageable overall
The Fabia Mk2 1.2 TSI can be a reliable and economical car if the timing chain has been addressed and a manual gearbox is fitted. The main risk is the EA111 timing chain tensioner, which was significantly improved after mid-2011 but remains a concern on all chain-equipped engines. Turbo actuator sticking and DQ200 DSG issues are secondary but costly. With a manual gearbox and proof of timing chain replacement, most other issues are minor.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Timing chain elongation on CBZA/CBZB/CBZC engines manufactured before 18 June 2011 Critical - verify completed
Takata driver airbag propellant deterioration (2012-2014 models) Verify completed
Camshaft adjuster bolts (vehicles manufactured Jan 2014 - Jan 2015) Verify completed
DSG pressure accumulator crack (2013-2015 models with DQ200) Verify if applicable
Contact a Skoda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The timing chain recall is especially critical for pre-June 2011 models and can cause catastrophic engine damage if not addressed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Fabia Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2013-2014 models
Extended warranty Not typically available for cars this age
All Fabia Mk2 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. No extended warranty programs are typically available for vehicles of this age. Budget for repairs accordingly.
