The first-generation Fabia with the 1.9 TDI PD is the workhorse of the Mk1 range. It uses the same proven Pumpe-Duse four-cylinder diesel found across the VW Group (Golf Mk4, Polo 9N, Ibiza 6L), producing 100 hp from the ATD or AXR engine codes. No DPF, no complex emissions equipment, and parts are cheap and widely available. The engine is fundamentally robust and high-mileage examples beyond 300,000 km are well documented.· more· less

Proven, high-mileage PD diesel No DPF, cheap parts and servicing
Dual mass flywheel wear common EGR and turbo VNT need attention
Buy if: You want an economical diesel runabout for longer journeys and can verify complete service history with correct VW 505.01 oil specification.
Avoid if: You only drive short urban trips (EGR clogs, turbo VNT sticks), or the car has unknown service history with no proof of oil specification used.

Common Problems
Proven workhorse with manageable diesel wear items
The 1.9 TDI PD engine is one of the most durable diesel units ever produced by the VW Group. Many examples exceed 300,000 km without major engine work. The main concerns are typical diesel wear items: dual mass flywheel, EGR valve, and turbo VNT vanes. These are well-understood, widely documented, and affordable to repair at independent garages familiar with VAG diesels. Strict adherence to VW 505.01 oil specification (5W-40) and regular servicing are essential for long engine life. Cars used for short trips suffer more from EGR and turbo issues than those used for regular motorway driving.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Tandem fuel pump cover bolts may break, causing diesel fuel leak (Mar 2004 - Aug 2004 production) Verify completed
Airbag control unit wiring incorrectly installed, curtain airbag deploys on wrong side (Jun 2006 - May 2007 production) Verify completed
Passenger airbag may rupture when activated (certain 2001 production vehicles) Verify completed
Contact a Skoda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The tandem pump bolt recall is particularly important for 2004-built cars with pump-injector diesel engines.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk1 Fabias
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all Mk1 Fabias
All first-generation Fabias are well beyond their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Extended warranty options are not available for vehicles of this age. Budget for potential repairs accordingly.
