The first car to wear the Skoda RS badge, launched alongside the brand's entry into the WRC. Built on the PQ34 platform shared with the Golf Mk4 and SEAT Leon, it uses the 180 hp AUQ version of the 1.8T 20-valve turbo engine, paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive. It offers near-Golf GTI performance with significantly more boot space and lower insurance costs. With all examples now over 20 years old, condition and maintenance history matter far more than mileage.· more· less

Common Problems
Fundamentally robust engine, but age demands attentive ownership
The 1.8T AUQ engine is well-proven and capable of exceeding 250,000 km with proper maintenance. The 5-speed manual gearbox is reliable and the overall drivetrain is straightforward. However, with all examples now over 20 years old, age-related issues dominate: brittle vacuum hoses, deteriorated coil packs, worn suspension, and failing window regulators affect virtually every surviving car. The critical factor is maintenance history. Cars with documented synthetic oil changes and timing belt replacements are significantly more dependable than neglected examples. The key risk is oil sludge leading to turbo failure, which is preventable but expensive to fix.

The Mk1 Octavia predates modern EU recall databases. Contact Skoda with the VIN to verify whether any outstanding recalls or service actions apply to the specific car. The brake servo vacuum hose should be inspected regardless, as cracking is a known age-related failure on all Mk1 Octavias.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk1 Octavias
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all Mk1 Octavias
Extended warranty Not available for cars this age
All Mk1 Octavia RS models are well beyond any factory or extended warranty. Budget for all repairs from day one.
