The original Octavia marked Skoda's transformation under VW Group ownership. Built on the PQ34 platform shared with the Golf Mk4, the 1.6 petrol is the simplest engine in the range: no turbo, no direct injection, just a port-injected four-cylinder with a timing belt. Spacious for its class and cheap to run, it became popular with families and taxi operators across Central and Eastern Europe.· more· less

Common Problems
Simple and long-lived, but age is the main challenge
The 1.6 petrol engine in the Octavia Mk1 is one of the most straightforward and durable units VW Group has produced. No turbo, no direct injection, no timing chain. Many examples have exceeded 300,000 km on original internals with nothing more than routine servicing. At 20+ years old, the main ownership concerns are universal age-related issues: body rust, worn electrical components, and degraded rubber and plastic parts. Rust is by far the biggest threat to continued use, as structural corrosion can make the car uneconomical to repair regardless of engine condition.
