The first-generation Skoda Superb was built on the Volkswagen B5 platform and offered premium-car space at a fraction of the price. The 1.8T AWT engine is the well-known EA113 20-valve turbo four found across the Volkswagen Group lineup, producing 150 hp and 210 Nm. Available exclusively with front-wheel drive, it combines adequate performance with reasonable fuel economy. With the B5 platform also underpinning the VW Passat and Audi A4 of the same era, parts availability remains excellent.· more· less

Common Problems
Depends heavily on maintenance history
The 1.8T AWT engine is fundamentally sound and has proven its longevity across millions of Volkswagen Group cars. Well-maintained examples with regular synthetic oil changes and timely timing belt replacements can reach 200,000+ km without major drama. The main risks are all preventable: oil sludge from skipped or incorrect oil changes, turbo failure from blocked oil feed lines, and suspension wear from normal ageing. The complex front suspension is the most expensive predictable repair. Finding a car with complete service documentation and evidence of short oil change intervals is the single most important buying factor.
