The Skoda Fabia Mk2 with the 1.4 TDI carries the same three-cylinder Pumpe-Duse diesel (BNM 70 hp, BNV/BMS 80 hp) found in the previous generation and the VW Polo 9N. It is one of the most fuel-efficient superminis of its era, comfortably returning 4-5 L/100 km. Parts are cheap and widely available through the VW Group network, and many examples exceed 200,000 km with strict servicing.· more· less

Very frugal (4-5 L/100 km real-world) Cheap parts across VW Group network
Oil pump chain design weakness DPF-equipped variants need longer trips
Buy if: You do mostly longer journeys, can verify complete service history with correct VW 505.01 oil, and want an economical diesel supermini.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF clogging, turbo actuator sticking) or the service history is incomplete or shows unknown oil specifications.

Common Problems
Fundamentally reliable engine, but the oil pump chain is a known design weakness
The 1.4 TDI PD is a simple, fuel-efficient engine that can reach high mileages with proper maintenance. The most critical concern is the oil pump/balance shaft chain, which is a design weakness unrelated to maintenance. EGR, DPF (on BMS variants), and turbo actuator issues are largely prevented by regular motorway driving and correct servicing. Using VW 505.01 specification oil is essential to avoid camshaft wear. Cars with documented service history and predominantly longer-distance use profiles are significantly less risky purchases.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Curtain airbag wiring (May 2007 production): incorrect wiring could inflate airbag on wrong side Verify completed
Fuel filter housing crack (April 2011 - October 2014): vibration can crack the fuel filter cover, causing fuel leak Verify completed
Tandem pump cover bolts (3 and 4 cylinder PD engines): bolts may break due to production defect Verify if applicable
Passenger airbag gas generator leak (various production dates): airbag may not inflate correctly Verify completed
Contact a Skoda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel filter housing recall is particularly relevant for 2011-2014 models.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Fabia Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on 2007-2013 models, may still apply to late 2014 production
All Fabia Mk2 1.4 TDI models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Extended warranties may be available through independent providers but will typically exclude pre-existing conditions.
