Skoda's compact hatchback on the MQB-A0 platform fitted with the bivalent 1.0 TGI three-cylinder running primarily on CNG with a 9-litre petrol reserve. Three steel CNG tanks store 13.8 kg of natural gas at 200 bar, giving roughly 300 km of CNG range. The engine is a CNG-adapted version of the EA211 EVO with reinforced valves and seats, shared with the SEAT Leon TGI and earlier Octavia G-TEC. Fuel costs are exceptionally low where CNG is taxed favourably, but the CNG filling network has shrunk significantly across Europe.· more· less

Very low CNG fuel costs Reinforced valves and seats for CNG
Shrinking CNG station network Reduced boot space from tanks
Buy if: You live near reliable CNG stations and want very low fuel costs from a practical hatchback with a manual gearbox.
Avoid if: Your local CNG filling network is sparse or you mainly do short urban trips where carbon buildup accelerates.
Maintenance costs
€700 - €1,250/year
15,000 km/year
Fixed costs
€450-750

Common Problems
Solid base engine with CNG-specific costs to plan for
The Scala 1.0 TGI shares its EA211 EVO base with the TSI, so the core mechanical risks (turbo actuator, valve carbon, water pump) are well understood. CNG-specific concerns add a high-pressure regulator and pressure sensor to the watch list, plus mandatory periodic gas-system inspections that are an unavoidable fixed cost rather than a true repair risk. Manual gearbox versions are notably more reliable than DSG. The biggest practical risk is not the car itself but the shrinking CNG filling network across Europe.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
E-Call system software fault (produced Aug-Sep 2019, approx. 1,500 vehicles) Verify completed
E-Call system software update (produced Jul 2019 - Feb 2020, approx. 3,800 vehicles) Verify completed
Seat cover seam defect affecting side airbag deployment (produced Jul-Sep 2019) Verify completed
Contact a Skoda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. Early 2019-2020 production Scala models are most likely to be affected.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all pre-2024 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all Scala models (until at least 2031)
Extended warranty Available through Skoda dealers
Most used Scala 1.0 TGI models are now outside their 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active. Extended warranty is worth considering given the CNG-specific components.
