The entry-level petrol in the Mk2 Octavia range. The 1.4 MPI is a simple, port-injected naturally aspirated engine from the EA111 family, offered as BCA (75 hp) in pre-facelift cars and CGGA/BUD (80 hp) after the 2008 facelift. Built on the PQ35 platform shared with the Golf Mk5, it offers near-Passat interior space at a budget price. The engine lacks turbocharging and direct injection, which makes it mechanically straightforward but adequate rather than powerful.· more· less

Common Problems
Simple engine with age-related body concerns
The 1.4 MPI engine is one of the simpler and more reliable options in the Mk2 Octavia range. It lacks the turbo, direct injection, and timing chain complexities of its TSI counterparts, which means fewer expensive mechanical surprises. The main ownership concerns are age-related rather than engine-related: corrosion is the primary threat on cars now 12-22 years old, especially in salt-belt regions. Electrical niggles (ignition coils, window regulators) are common but inexpensive. With regular oil changes and timely timing belt replacement, the engine itself routinely exceeds 200,000 km.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
ABS/ESC control unit thermal overload (June 2008 - June 2009 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (selected 2004-2013 models) Verify with VIN
Contact a Skoda dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The ABS/ESC recall is particularly important for 2008-2009 models as it affects vehicle stability control.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all but the latest 2013 models
All Mk2 Octavias are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Skoda offered a 12-year rust perforation warranty, which has also expired on most examples. Third-party warranty providers offer coverage but typically exclude pre-existing corrosion.
