The Fabia Mk3 with the 1.4 TDI is one of the most fuel-efficient superminis on the market, returning around 3.5-4.5 L/100 km in real-world driving. The three-cylinder EA288 diesel replaced the older PD unit injector engines, switching to common-rail injection with Delphi fuel system components. It was available in 75, 90, and 105 hp versions, all sharing the same basic architecture. Parts are affordable through the Volkswagen Group network, and the car is straightforward to maintain at independent workshops.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable small diesel, but needs regular longer drives
The 1.4 TDI EA288 is a well-engineered three-cylinder diesel with no widespread catastrophic failures. The engine is generally robust and many examples exceed 200,000 km without major powertrain issues. The main ownership risks are typical of modern small diesels: DPF clogging from short-trip use, gradual EGR carbon buildup, and eventual injector or clutch/DMF wear. Cars with documented service history and regular motorway use tend to be the most reliable. The timing belt has a generous 210,000 km replacement interval, reducing scheduled maintenance costs.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (vehicles built June 2012 - December 2017) Verify completed
Tandem fuel pump cover bolts (3 and 4-cylinder diesel engines) Verify completed
Driver airbag deployment speed (vehicles built January-February 2018) Verify if applicable
Curtain airbag wiring in connector block (incorrect installation) Verify completed
Check recall status at skoda-auto.com/services/recall-campaigns using the VIN. The Takata airbag and tandem fuel pump recalls are particularly important for diesel models built before 2018.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used Fabia Mk3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on cars built after 2014
Extended warranty Available through Skoda dealers, typically 1-2 years
All Fabia Mk3 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on newer cars within the production range. Extended warranties are available through Skoda dealers but typically exclude wear items and pre-existing conditions.
