The more powerful diesel option in the Scenic III lineup, the 2.0 dCi uses the Renault-Nissan M9R engine producing 150 or 160 hp depending on the tune. Co-developed with Nissan and used across Laguna, X-Trail, and Qashqai models, the M9R is chain-driven (no timing belt), which means no scheduled belt replacement but a costly chain job if it eventually stretches. With strong torque (340-380 Nm) it handles a fully loaded Scenic comfortably, especially on motorway trips.· more· less

Strong M9R torque, good for towing Chain-driven, no timing belt change
Timing chain stretches at high mileage Injectors can seize in the head
Buy if: You want the strongest diesel Scenic III for regular motorway use or towing, with a manual gearbox and verifiable service history showing short oil change intervals.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF/EGR clogging), want an automatic, or cannot tolerate the risk of expensive timing chain or injector work.

Common Problems
Capable engine, but timing chain and injectors need monitoring
The M9R 2.0 dCi is a robust engine that can exceed 300,000 km with proper maintenance. It avoids the oil consumption issues of the smaller 1.5 dCi K9K. However, the timing chain eventually needs replacing (a significant cost), and the Bosch injectors are notorious for seizing in the cylinder head if moisture gets to them. The Scenic III platform adds its own concerns: electronic parking brake faults, water ingress through blocked scuttle drains, and window regulator failures. Manual gearbox versions are more reliable than the automatic. Keep oil changes to 15,000 km maximum with the correct specification, clear the scuttle drains regularly, and budget for timing chain replacement around 180,000-200,000 km.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake vacuum pump failure causing loss of servo assistance and hard brake pedal (2009-2012 production) Critical - verify completed
Brake assistance failure on repeated slope stops (2009-2012 production) Verify completed
Dashboard instrument cluster total failure (October 2009 production) Verify completed
Power steering electrical supply routing (2009-2011 production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (selected 2009-2014 production) Verify completed
Contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake vacuum pump recall is particularly important as it directly affects braking assistance.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Scenic Mk3 models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all models (last Mk3: 2016 + 6 = 2022)
Extended warranty Available through Renault dealers or third-party providers
All Renault Scenic Mk3 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 6-year rust perforation warranty. Given the car's age (10-17 years), third-party warranty options may be limited and often exclude pre-existing diesel system issues. An independent Renault specialist is the most cost-effective option for maintenance and repairs.

Same platform, smaller engine. K9K has timing belt (cheaper scheduled replacement) but known oil consumption issues. Lower repair costs overall.
Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI 5T
Volkswagen Touran 2.0 TDI 5T 2015-2026
More modern MQB platform with better build quality. EA288 diesel is belt-driven but robust. AdBlue and EGR system complexity are the main concerns.
Ford Focus Mk3 2.0 TDCi
Ford Focus Mk3 2.0 TDCi 2011-2018
Similar overall reliability. Focus has expensive steering rack failures as a unique weak point. Smaller interior than the Scenic.
Renault Scenic 1.4 TCe Mk3
Renault Scenic 1.4 TCe Mk3 2009-2016
Petrol alternative on the same platform. No DPF or EGR concerns, but the H4J has head gasket vulnerability and timing chain issues of its own.
