The facelifted Phase 2 Zoe (ZE50) launched in late 2019 with a new 52 kWh battery, redesigned interior and the R110 motor producing 80 kW. It was Europe's best-selling EV for years thanks to a strong WLTP range claim (up to 385 km) and a 22 kW AC charger that nearly all rivals lack. Production ended in March 2024, replaced by the Renault 5 E-Tech. Known weak points include heat pump and air-conditioning leaks, 12V battery drain, charging system faults, and a Euro NCAP zero-star rating after the 2021 retest.· more· less

22 kW AC charging is class-leading Strong real-world range from 52 kWh
Zero-star Euro NCAP (2021) Charging and heat pump faults common
Buy if: You charge mostly on AC, drive predictable urban and commuter routes, and can verify the 2021 battery fire recall and battery State of Health.
Avoid if: You need a high crash-safety rating, plan long highway trips, or are looking at a battery-leased example without confirming the lease has been bought out.

Common Problems
Mid-range reliability with known weak points but mostly affordable repairs
The Phase 2 Zoe is a workable second-hand EV provided you accept its known issues. Charging system, heat pump, and 12V battery faults are common but manageable, and EV specialist shops have driven repair costs down significantly. The R110 motor's bearing/sensor failure is rare but expensive at a dealer. Zero-star Euro NCAP rating and battery-lease confusion are the bigger purchase considerations.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
BT4 XLR battery internal short-circuit fire risk (production 3 Jan - 22 Feb 2021, 773 units) Critical - verify completed
Software update for high-voltage battery management system (multiple campaigns 2020-2023) Verify if applicable
Charging cable lock micro-switch (selected 2020-2022 builds) Verify if applicable
Contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 2021 BT4 XLR battery recall is critical because of the fire risk; only a small number of Phase 2 cars are affected, but if yours is one of them the fix must be done.
Warranty Status
Vehicle warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on most Phase 2 cars (built 2019-2022)
High-voltage battery warranty 8 years / 160,000 km to 70% capacity (owned batteries)
Drivetrain (motor/inverter) warranty 5 years / 100,000 km — verify by VIN
Rust perforation warranty 12 years
The HV battery warranty is the most valuable remaining cover on a used Phase 2 Zoe. It only applies to owned batteries — leased batteries are guaranteed by the lease contract instead. Confirm exact remaining battery warranty with Renault using the VIN before purchase.

Opel Corsa-e 2019-present
Same Stellantis platform as e-208. Comparable reliability with fewer reported charging faults than the Zoe.
Renault Megane E-Tech EV60
Renault Megane E-Tech EV60 2022-present
Newer Renault EV on the CMF-EV platform. Stronger safety rating and better cabin tech. Heat pump and battery management generally more reliable.
