The diesel version of Renault's second-generation city car, using the widely produced K9K 1.5 dCi engine shared with the Clio, Modus, and Dacia Logan. The engine is capable of excellent fuel economy and, with disciplined maintenance, can comfortably exceed 200,000 km. However, putting a diesel in a car primarily used for urban driving creates a fundamental tension: the DPF (on Euro 5 models from 2011) and EGR system need regular motorway running that many Twingo owners never provide.· more· less

Proven K9K diesel, very economical Cheap parts, widely available
Injectors sensitive to fuel quality Connecting rod bearings on early K9K
Buy if: You cover regular longer commutes, want very low fuel costs, and can find one with full service history showing oil changes every 10,000-15,000 km.
Avoid if: The car has been used mainly for short urban trips, or the service history shows extended oil change intervals beyond 15,000 km.

Common Problems
Reliable engine if maintained, but diesel complexity in a city car is a mismatch
The K9K 1.5 dCi is one of the most widely produced small diesel engines in Europe, and with strict oil change discipline it can reach well over 200,000 km. The main risk factors are fuel quality-sensitive injectors, turbo wear from poor oil maintenance, and (on Euro 4/early Euro 5 versions) connecting rod bearing wear. Putting this diesel in the Twingo creates an inherent tension, as the car is designed for urban use where diesel engines suffer most from DPF clogging and carbon buildup. Cars with documented regular motorway use and short oil change intervals are the safest purchases.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Bonnet skin adhesive failure (may detach while driving) Verify completed
Airbag control module incorrect programming (unintended deployment) Critical - verify completed
Rear spoiler/tailgate glass detachment risk Verify completed
Rear bench seat fixation device (may break in frontal collision) Verify completed
Contact Renault with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The airbag control module recall is particularly important as unintended airbag deployment has been reported by owners.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Twingo Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all models
All Twingo Mk2 dCi models are well outside their original factory warranty. No Renault extended warranty programs apply to vehicles of this age. Third-party warranty providers may offer coverage but typically exclude diesel-specific components (turbo, DPF, injectors) on cars over 10 years old.

↔ Also consider

Renault Twingo 1.2 Mk2
Renault Twingo 1.2 Mk2 2007-2014
Same car with the simple 1.2 petrol engine. Avoids all diesel-specific risks (DPF, EGR, injectors) but has throttle body and coil pack faults. Lower overall risk.
Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Mk1
Fiat 500 1.3 Multijet Mk1 2007-2020
Similar diesel city car concept. The Multijet has worse oil dilution and DPF issues on short trips. Generally less reliable than the K9K in this application.
Renault Twingo 0.9 TCe Mk3
Renault Twingo 0.9 TCe Mk3 2014-2024
Successor with rear-mounted turbo petrol engine. Avoids diesel complexity but adds turbo wastegate sticking concerns. More modern platform overall.
Renault Twingo Electric Mk3
Renault Twingo Electric Mk3 2020-2024
Electric successor with very low maintenance costs. Main risk is the Cameleon charging system thermal design flaw. No engine maintenance needed.
Smart ForTwo W451 0.8 CDI
Smart ForTwo W451 0.8 CDI 2007-2014
Another micro diesel for urban use. The 0.8 CDI has turbo blade folding and EGR clogging on city driving. Even less practical than the Twingo.
