Renault's CMF-CD platform SUV replaced the Kadjar in 2022, pairing a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo with two electric motors and an innovative clutchless dog-clutch gearbox producing 200 hp combined. The E-Tech full hybrid system can drive on electric power alone at speeds up to 80 km/h and delivers real-world fuel consumption of around 5-6 l/100 km. The system is sophisticated but complex, sharing much of its hybrid architecture with the Arkana and Captur E-Tech models.· more· less

Efficient hybrid, long EV cruising 200 hp output with low fuel use
Gearbox shift quality inconsistent Multiple recalls in short production
Buy if: You want a fuel-efficient mid-size SUV with hybrid tech and can verify all recalls are completed, especially on early-build models.
Avoid if: You expect smooth, seamless gear changes or drive mostly motorway miles where the hybrid advantage is minimal and the three-cylinder engine becomes loud.

Common Problems
Innovative but not yet fully mature hybrid system
The Renault Austral E-Tech 200 uses a sophisticated but still-evolving powertrain. The dog-clutch gearbox and hybrid system are covered by an 8-year warranty, which mitigates the financial risk of the most expensive potential failures. Most issues reported so far relate to software calibration and sensor problems rather than catastrophic mechanical failure. Cars built after mid-2023 with the latest software updates are notably better than early production models. The absence of a conventional clutch or timing belt eliminates two traditional wear items, but the complexity of the hybrid system limits which independent garages can perform maintenance.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Gearbox faults causing hard shifts and hesitation (Oct 2022 - Jun 2024 production, 32,450 vehicles) Critical - verify completed
Parking brake actuator position sensor defect (Apr 2024 - Jan 2025 production) Verify completed
Front seat automatic retraction risk to rear passengers (Apr 2022 - Nov 2023, recall code OE9W, 27,893 vehicles) Verify completed
Wheel fixing screws insufficiently tightened (2022 early production) Verify completed
The Austral has had four significant recalls in its short production life. The gearbox recall is the most critical for drivability and long-term powertrain health. Contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed before purchase.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on 2022-2023 models, active on recent cars
Hybrid components (8 years / 160,000 km) Covers electric motors, HV battery, inverter, gearbox
HV battery capacity guarantee 8 years / 160,000 km, minimum 63% capacity
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all Australs
Renault's standard EU warranty is 2 years with no mileage limit. Most used 2022-2023 Australs will be outside the general warranty. However, the hybrid components (electric motors, HV battery, inverter, and the multimode gearbox) are covered for 8 years or 160,000 km, which provides meaningful protection on the most expensive components. Verify remaining hybrid warranty coverage with a Renault dealer using the VIN.
