The second-generation Scenic was one of Europe's best-selling compact MPVs. The 2.0 16v F4R petrol offered adequate performance for a family hauler, though the smaller 1.5 dCi diesel outsold it significantly. Parts are inexpensive and widely available. The platform shares many components with the Megane II, so any Renault specialist will know it well.· more· less

Common Problems
Affordable but demands patience with electrical gremlins
The F4R engine itself is reasonably durable when the timing belt and dephaser are maintained on schedule. The main ownership burden is the Scenic II's complex electrical architecture, which produces a steady stream of minor and moderate failures: electronic parking brake, instrument cluster, window regulators, steering lock, and heater blower. None of these individually is catastrophic, but together they create a car that requires regular attention. Manual gearbox versions are significantly more reliable than those with the DP0 automatic. Finding a well-maintained example with documented service history is critical.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Electronic parking brake unintended engagement while driving (post-June 2005 production) Critical - verify completed
Ignition coil replacement (SAGEM to DENSO units, early production cars) Verify completed
Airbag inflator chemical mixture defect (window airbags, selected production dates) Verify completed
Contact Renault with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The electronic parking brake recall is particularly important for cars built after June 2005. Renault does not use Takata airbags, so the global Takata recall does not apply.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Scenic Mk2 models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all Scenic Mk2 models
All Scenic Mk2 models are well outside any original factory or rust warranty. Third-party extended warranties are available but may exclude known weak points like the electronic parking brake and instrument cluster.
