Europe's first mass-market affordable EV, the Zoe Phase 1 with Q210 motor offered 43 kW AC fast charging via its Chameleon charger and a 22 kWh battery giving roughly 100-150 km real-world range. Now available very cheaply on the used market, it remains practical for short commutes but carries specific risks around its Continental-supplied motor and onboard charger that buyers must understand.· more· less

43 kW AC fast charging capable Very low routine maintenance costs
Continental motor bearing wear Onboard charger prone to failure
Buy if: You need an inexpensive urban EV with home charging, can verify battery ownership status, and accept the limited 100-150 km real-world range.
Avoid if: You need more than 100 km daily range, cannot budget for potential motor or charger repairs, or the battery is still on a lease contract you cannot exit affordably.

Common Problems
Early EV with known motor and charger design weaknesses
The Zoe Q210 is a pioneering but aging EV. The Continental motor has documented bearing durability issues that worsen beyond 80,000 km, and the onboard charger uses obsolete components prone to grid-voltage damage. These are not minor faults — both can leave the car undriveable and cost thousands to repair. However, many Q210s have exceeded 150,000 km with only minor issues, especially when maintained by specialists who understand these specific failure modes. The 22 kWh battery has proven surprisingly durable with typical degradation of 15-18% over 10 years.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake fluid hose wear from wheel arch liner contact (2012-2014 production) Verify completed
Gearbox parking lock pin failure allowing vehicle roll-away (2015-2017 production) Verify completed
Steering column motor control failure causing loss of power steering (2012-2014 production) Verify completed
Gearbox parking mechanism repeat issue (July-October 2017 production) Verify completed
Contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The parking lock and brake hose recalls are particularly important for safety. Multiple recall campaigns have affected Phase 1 Zoes across the production run.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Phase 1 Zoes
Battery warranty (if owned) 8 years / 160,000 km to 75% SoH
Battery lease guarantee Replacement below 75% SoH (if lease active)
All Phase 1 Zoes are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. If the battery is on a lease contract, Renault guarantees replacement if capacity drops below 75% SoH. If battery is owned outright, the 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty may still apply to newer Phase 1 cars (2017-2019). Verify battery warranty status with Renault using the VIN.

Nissan Leaf 40kWh ZE1
Nissan Leaf 40kWh ZE1 2018-2024
More range, simpler drivetrain, fewer charging system faults. Battery degradation worse due to passive cooling. CHAdeMO fast charging becoming obsolete.
Peugeot e-208 Electric Mk1
Peugeot e-208 Electric Mk1 2020-present
Newer platform with 50 kWh battery. Onboard charger failure is main risk. More modern safety systems and higher NCAP rating.
Renault Zoe R110 Phase 2
Renault Zoe R110 Phase 2 2019-2024
Same platform but Renault-developed motor and larger battery. R110 motor has its own issues but better overall reliability than Q210.
Smart EQ fortwo W453
Smart EQ fortwo W453 2017-2024
Even smaller battery (17.6 kWh) and range. DC-DC converter failures common. Cheaper to buy but less practical for anything beyond city use.
