The Austral replaced the Kadjar as Renault's compact SUV, built on the CMF-CD platform at the Palencia factory in Spain. The 1.3 TCe 160 mild-hybrid pairs the well-known H5Ht four-cylinder turbo (co-developed with Nissan and Daimler) with a 12V starter-generator and Jatco X-Tronic CVT. Standard equipment is generous, with the Google-based OpenR Link infotainment on a 12-inch screen. In the What Car? reliability survey, the Austral placed 72nd out of 76 family SUVs, driven largely by electrical and software complaints in the first production years.· more· less

Common Problems
New model with teething problems, but the engine is well-proven
The Austral's 1.3 TCe engine is well-established across Renault, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz models with generally solid long-term durability. The main concerns are early-production software glitches, infotainment instability, and multiple recalls addressing safety-critical systems. Most issues are fixable via software updates at no cost, but the number of recalls and the below-average reliability survey scores suggest careful pre-purchase inspection is essential. The CVT transmission is simpler and generally more dependable than the EDC dual-clutch found in other Renault models with this engine.

Front seat Easy Access function posing injury risk to rear passengers (2022-2023 production, 27,893 vehicles) Verify completed

The Austral has had an above-average number of recalls for a car this young. Contact Renault with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The ABS/ESP software and wheel bolt torque recalls are safety-critical and should be confirmed before any test drive.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on 2022-2023 models; may still apply to 2024+ cars
Rust perforation warranty 6 years from first registration
Extended warranty Available through Renault dealers, various durations and mileage limits
Renault's standard EU warranty is 2 years with no mileage limit. Early Austral models from 2022-2023 are now outside factory warranty. Check whether extended warranty was purchased by the previous owner, as this can provide valuable coverage given the model's recall history.
