The Espace V 2.0 Blue dCi uses a 6-speed Getrag wet-clutch dual-clutch transmission (EDC6). While more robust than Renault's dry-clutch EDC7, it develops issues between 80,000 and 120,000 km. Symptoms include jerky low-speed maneuvers, hesitation during gear changes, and in severe cases complete loss of drive. The transmission control unit (TCU) and valve body are common failure points. Renault dealers typically quote full gearbox replacement at around €3,000, but specialist transmission shops can rebuild the unit for €800-1,500. Regular transmission oil changes every 60,000 km are essential but often neglected because Renault markets the gearbox oil as a lifetime fill.

The 4Control system uses electric motors to steer the rear wheels up to 3.5 degrees, improving both low-speed maneuverability and high-speed stability. Early-production Espace V models experienced widespread failures of these rear steering motors, prompting Renault to change the component supplier for later production. When the system fails, the rear wheels lock in the neutral position and a warning message appears on the dashboard. Repair involves replacing the rear steering actuator and control module. The replacement module costs approximately €800-1,200 for the part alone, with labor adding several hours due to rear axle accessibility. Later production cars (2020 onwards) appear to be more reliable in this area.

The 2.0 Blue dCi relies on a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) system with AdBlue injection to meet Euro 6d emissions standards. The system includes a NOx sensor, AdBlue pump, injector, and a heated tank. Any of these components can fail, triggering a warning countdown that eventually prevents engine restart if not addressed. The NOx sensor is the most common failure point at €300-600 for the part. If the AdBlue pump seizes from crystallization, replacement costs €500-800 at an independent garage. A recall addressed improperly tightened NOx sensors on Sept 2018 to June 2019 production cars, which posed a fire risk. Like all modern diesels, the 2.0 Blue dCi is fitted with a diesel particulate filter. With predominantly urban or short-trip driving, the filter cannot complete regeneration cycles, leading to progressive soot buildup. The exhaust gas recirculation valve recirculates exhaust gases into the intake to reduce NOx emissions. Over time, carbon deposits accumulate on the valve and intake manifold, causing the valve to stick. Symptoms include rough idling, power loss at low rpm, increased fuel consumption, and sometimes dark exhaust smoke. Cleaning the EGR valve and intake manifold costs €250-400 at an independent garage. If the valve mechanism is damaged, replacement costs €400-800. Short-trip driving accelerates carbon buildup significantly. Regular higher-rpm motorway driving helps slow the process.

The Espace V uses Renault's R-Link 2 multimedia system, which can suffer from frozen touchscreens, black screen episodes, navigation crashes, and unresponsive climate controls. Many issues appeared within the first 10,000-30,000 km and were often caused by software bugs or defective control units. Software updates from Renault addressed some problems, but hardware failures of the head unit also occur. Short-trip urban driving accelerates the problem because the turbo never reaches temperatures high enough to burn off deposits. Several owners report oil seepage at the engine-gearbox mating surface, sometimes appearing within 4-5 years of production.
