The first affordable long-range EV widely available in Europe. The Phase 1 Zoe with R240 motor (Renault-designed, replacing the earlier Continental Q210) offers a compact city car footprint with usable electric range. Its Chameleon charger integrates charging electronics into the motor inverter, a clever but failure-prone design. Battery lease complications and limited real-world range (80-120 km depending on season) define the used market.· more· less

Very low routine maintenance costs Simple drivetrain, few wear parts
Chameleon charger prone to failure Limited range with 22 kWh battery
Buy if: You need an affordable short-range commuter EV with home charging and can verify the battery is owned (not leased) and charging system is healthy.
Avoid if: You need more than 100 km daily range, rely on rapid charging (R240 limited to 22 kW AC), or cannot inspect the charging system thoroughly before purchase.

Common Problems
Affordable EV with one potentially expensive weakness
The Zoe R240 is mechanically simple with few moving parts, but the integrated Chameleon charger is a documented design weakness that can produce repair bills exceeding the car's value. Motor bearings are a secondary concern on higher-mileage examples. Routine items (12V battery, suspension) are cheap individually but frequent. Most Phase 1 Zoes still running in 2026 have survived their riskiest years, so a well-maintained example with a healthy charging system and verified battery ownership represents reasonable value.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front wheel arch liner damaging brake hose (vehicles built before Oct 2014) Verify completed
Parking brake mechanism failure (2012-2016 production) Verify completed
Steering column motor control internal failure (2016-2018) Verify if applicable
Contact Renault with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake hose recall is particularly important for early R240 models (2015 production). Check that the parking lock mechanism has been updated.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Phase 1 R240 models
Battery warranty (if owned) 8 years / 160,000 km with 66% SOH guarantee
Battery lease warranty Ongoing if lease active (75% SOH guarantee)
All Phase 1 R240 Zoes (2015-2017) are well outside their 2-year factory warranty. If the battery is owned outright, the 8-year battery warranty may still apply on 2018-registered cars. If battery is leased, the lease agreement provides ongoing coverage for degradation below 75% SOH, but carries monthly costs of approximately €70-80.
