Soot build-up on the EGR valve is one of the most reported issues on this engine, especially on cars used mainly for short urban trips. The valve sticks open or closed, triggering the injection warning light, stalling at roundabouts, rough cold starts, and black smoke. Cleaning the valve and pipes runs €80-150 at an independent shop, full replacement €250-500. Many owners DIY the clean for the cost of brake cleaner and an hour of work. A full motorway run every few weeks helps keep deposits down.

The DCM1.2 ECU fitted to 1.5 dCi engines built between 2002 and 2015 has a documented failure pattern. Typical symptoms are complete non-start with no diagnostic communication, immobiliser light staying on, coolant fan running constantly, and main relay not functioning. ECU testing and remanufacturing services charge €250-400 for the unit plus immobiliser recoding (€100-200). A new ECU from Renault is significantly more expensive. This is more of a long-tail risk than a near-certain failure, but worth knowing about.

Electrical faults are widely reported across the Mk2 range. Common symptoms include intermittent central locking and immobiliser issues, airbag warning light staying on (broken wire under the seat is the classic cause), dashboard warning lights flickering, and air conditioning climate flap motor failures. Water entering the engine bay fuse box leads to corrosion and erratic behaviour. Mk2 Clios are now 20+ years old and rust is the main structural concern. Common areas: rear wheel arches, sills, fuel filler area, rear suspension subframe, and brake/fuel lines underneath.
