Compact French supermini with the well-known K9K diesel, sold across Europe in huge numbers from 2001-2006. The 1.5 dCi was praised for fuel economy (often 4.5-5.0 L/100km) and the engine has reached 300,000+ km in well-maintained examples. Now 20+ years old, surviving examples are cheap to buy but typically need attention to age-related electrical faults, injectors, and turbo components.· more· less

Electrical gremlins are widespread Injector and turbo wear at high mileage
Buy if: You want extremely cheap diesel motoring and can tolerate the electrical quirks of a 20-year-old French car with documented service history.

Common Problems
Cheap to buy, but age-related issues add up
The 1.5 dCi engine itself can be very long-lived with proper maintenance, but Mk2 Clios are now over 20 years old and many surviving examples have accumulated electrical faults, injector wear, EGR clogging, and corrosion. A well-cared-for example with full service history is still a viable cheap commuter, but anything with a patchy history or visible rust should be approached with caution given the low purchase price and high relative repair costs.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Front airbag deployment issue (early Mk2 production, various dates) Verify completed
Brake servo / vacuum hose corrosion (some 2002-2004 builds) Verify if applicable
The Mk2 Clio is old enough that most factory recalls have been completed long ago, but always contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to confirm.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Long expired
Anti-corrosion warranty (12 years) Expired on all Mk2s
Extended warranty availability Limited - car too old for most third-party plans
All Mk2 Clios are far outside any factory or extended warranty coverage. Repairs are entirely at the owner's expense. Independent specialists are usually significantly cheaper than Renault dealers for this generation.
