Renault Megane 1.2 TCe Mk3

2012-2016 · 1.2 TCe H5Ft (115-132 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol

The Megane III received the 1.2 TCe engine from 2012 onwards as an efficient turbocharged petrol alternative to the older 1.6 naturally aspirated unit. It offered good performance from a small displacement, but the H5Ft engine carries a well-documented design defect causing excessive oil consumption, which led to a class-action lawsuit in France. Despite being a fundamentally capable compact car, the engine issues dominate the ownership picture for this variant.

Known engine design defect (oil) Timing chain premature stretch
Buy if: You find a well-maintained example with documented low oil consumption, frequent oil changes, and can verify the ECU software update has been applied.
Avoid if: The oil consumption history is unknown, the car only did short trips, or you hear any cold-start rattle from the timing chain.

Common Problems
Known engine design defect makes this a high-risk purchase
The 1.2 TCe H5Ft engine has a documented design flaw causing excessive oil consumption, acknowledged by Renault but never formally recalled. Over 400,000 European vehicles are affected, and a class-action lawsuit (MOTORGATE) is ongoing in France. The oil consumption creates a chain reaction: carbon buildup clogs the timing chain oil jet, exhaust valves burn from excessive heat, and the turbo degrades faster. All Megane III 1.2 TCe engines were produced during the affected 2012-2016 period. Manual gearbox versions avoid the additional EDC dual-clutch reliability concerns. Only buy with documented oil consumption history, frequent oil changes, and confirmed ECU software update.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Airbag may not deploy correctly (Jun 2010 - Aug 2010 production) Verify completed
Power steering failure risk (Oct 2009 - Mar 2010 production) Critical - verify completed
Brake vacuum pump failure affecting braking performance (2012-2015 production) Critical - verify completed
Brake pedal stop collapse causing reduced braking efficiency Verify completed
Side curtain airbag deployment failure (2017 recall campaign) Verify completed
Contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake vacuum pump and power steering recalls are safety-critical. Also ask whether the ECU software update for oil consumption was applied — this is not a formal recall but a service campaign that significantly affects engine longevity.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Megane III models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all models
Oil consumption goodwill Case-by-case through Renault dealers
All Megane III models are now well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Renault has occasionally offered goodwill contributions toward oil consumption repairs on the 1.2 TCe, particularly for engines built 2012-2016, but this is handled on a case-by-case basis and is not guaranteed. Extended warranty options are unlikely to cover pre-existing oil consumption issues.

Renault Megane III 1.6 16V 2008-2016 Same car with simpler naturally aspirated K4M engine. Avoids the oil consumption and timing chain issues entirely. Less power but significantly more reliable. Opel Astra 1.4 Turbo J 2009-2015 Direct competitor with similar turbo petrol concept. Has its own PCV and turbo wastegate issues but avoids the systematic oil consumption defect. Hyundai i30 1.4 GD 2012-2017 Simpler naturally aspirated engine with far fewer failure modes. Longer 5-year warranty. Generally more dependable but less powerful. Renault Megane IV 1.2 TCe 2016-2018 Same H5Ft engine in the newer Megane. Identical oil consumption and timing chain risks. Slightly better build quality but same fundamental issues. Renault Megane 1.5 dCi Mk3 2008-2016 Same car with proven K9K diesel. No oil consumption defect. DPF and EGR need attention but the engine itself is far more durable long-term.
