The fourth-generation Scenic brought a crossover-influenced design to the compact MPV segment, sitting on Renault-Nissan's CMF platform shared with the Megane IV and Kadjar. The 1.6 dCi R9M engine delivers 130 hp and 320 Nm, offering strong motorway performance and real-world consumption around 5-5.5 l/100 km. All Scenic Mk4 models come with mandatory 20-inch wheels, which give the car a distinctive stance but use an uncommon tire size (195/55R20). The 1.6 dCi was available from launch in 2016 until mid-2019, when it was replaced by the 1.7 Blue dCi with full SCR AdBlue injection.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable diesel for motorway use, but needs attentive maintenance
The R9M 1.6 dCi engine is generally considered solid within its class, and well-maintained Scenic Mk4 examples can exceed 200,000 km without major powertrain issues. However, the engine's emissions equipment (DPF, EGR, AdBlue) demands regular motorway use to stay healthy. Cars used primarily for short urban trips accumulate clogging problems rapidly. The EDC automatic gearbox adds a significant reliability concern that manual versions avoid. Manual gearbox versions with documented service histories and regular motorway use represent the lowest-risk ownership proposition.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Window airbag inflator chemical mixture defect (production Sep-Nov 2016) Verify completed
Automatic parking brake unintended release due to sound insulation detachment (production Jul-Oct 2016, auto gearbox only) Verify if applicable
Engine cooling fan capacitor overheating and fire risk (production Oct-Nov 2018) Verify completed
Fuel line internal damage causing leak and fire risk (production Sep 2018-Jun 2019) Verify completed
NOx sensor not correctly tightened during manufacture (production Sep 2018-Jun 2019) Verify completed
Contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The fuel line recall (2018-2019 production) is particularly important due to fire risk. Early 2016 production cars should be checked for both the airbag and parking brake recalls.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used Scenic Mk4 1.6 dCi models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) May still apply on late 2019 production cars
Extended warranty availability Available through Renault dealers and third-party providers
All Scenic Mk4 1.6 dCi models (2016-2019) are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The 6-year rust perforation warranty may still be valid on the newest examples. Renault has occasionally offered goodwill contributions on AdBlue system repairs depending on mileage and service history.
