The Austral replaced the Kadjar as Renault's compact SUV from 2022, built on the third-generation CMF-CD platform shared with Nissan. The Mild Hybrid 140 pairs the well-proven H5Ht 1.3 TCe four-cylinder (co-developed with Daimler and Nissan) with a 12V belt-integrated starter-generator for modest fuel savings. Available with a 6-speed manual or CVT automatic, it avoids the more complex E-Tech full-hybrid gearbox entirely. A 2025 facelift brought revised engine mounts, improved sound insulation, and software refinements.· more· less

Common Problems
Well-known engine, but new-generation electronics need maturing
The 1.3 TCe H5Ht engine is proven across millions of Renault, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz vehicles and is not prone to catastrophic failures when properly maintained. The main ownership concerns are the thermostat housing (a known weak point across all H5Ht applications), turbo pipe detachment, and the OpenR Link infotainment software. The 12V mild-hybrid system is simple and adds minimal complexity compared to the E-Tech full hybrid. Pre-facelift models (2022-2024) have more reported software and ADAS issues than the updated 2025 version. Reliability survey data places the Austral below average in its segment, though most issues are fixable rather than catastrophic.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Wheel bolt insufficient tightening (early production 2022) Verify completed
Front seat Easy Access function risk to rear passengers (Apr 2022 - Nov 2023) Verify completed
Electronic parking brake actuator sensor angle (Apr 2024 - Jan 2025) Verify completed
Contact Renault with the VIN to verify all recall campaigns have been completed. The oil vapour hose recall (campaign 0EWA) specifically affects E-Tech full-hybrid models, not the 1.3 TCe mild-hybrid variant covered in this report. The easy access seat recall is particularly important for early 2022-2023 production cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on 2022-2023 models, may remain on late 2024-2025 models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Active on all used Australs
12V mild-hybrid battery Covered under standard 2-year warranty only
Renault's EU factory warranty is 2 years with no mileage limit. Early 2022-2023 Australs are now outside this period. The 12V mild-hybrid system does not carry the separate 8-year battery warranty that applies to full-hybrid and electric Renault models. Extended warranty packages are available through Renault dealers.
