The Scenic Mk3 with the 1.6 dCi R9M engine replaced the older 1.9 dCi in 2011, bringing modern common-rail technology with strong torque (320 Nm) and competitive fuel economy around 5 l/100 km. The R9M is a Renault-Nissan co-developed unit also found in the Qashqai, X-Trail, and even some Mercedes models. It is generally regarded as more refined and more powerful than the smaller 1.5 dCi K9K, though the timing chain design introduces a significant repair concern at higher mileages.· more· less

Timing chain requires engine-out work EPB and electrical gremlins persist
Buy if: You want a capable family diesel MPV with good motorway manners and can find a manual gearbox example with verified service history.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips under 15 km, or the car has over 150,000 km with no evidence of timing chain inspection.

Common Problems
More refined than the 1.5 dCi, but timing chain is the wildcard
The R9M 1.6 dCi is a capable and efficient engine that can exceed 250,000 km with proper maintenance. Its main concern is the timing chain, which stretches at high mileages and requires expensive engine-out replacement. EGR fouling, oil leaks, and DPF clogging are manageable with regular motorway driving and correct servicing. The Scenic Mk3 platform adds electronic parking brake and electrical quirks regardless of engine choice. Manual gearbox versions are considerably more reliable than EDC automatics. Overall, a well-maintained 1.6 dCi is a solid family diesel, but budget for potential timing chain work on higher-mileage examples.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Brake vacuum pump failure causing stiff brake pedal (2009-2012 production) Critical - verify completed
Lack of braking assistance on repeated slope stops (2009-2012 production) Verify completed
EGR exhaust pipe cracking risk (R9M-equipped models) Verify completed
Power steering electrical supply routing (2009-2011 production) Verify completed
Sound insulation detachment causing unintentional parking brake release Verify completed
Fuel line damage with fire risk Critical - verify completed
Contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The brake vacuum pump recall and the fuel line fire risk recall are particularly important for safety.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Scenic Mk3 models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on all models (last Mk3: 2016 + 6 = 2022)
Extended warranty Available through Renault dealers or third-party providers
All Renault Scenic Mk3 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Given the car's age (10-15 years), third-party warranty options may be limited and often exclude pre-existing diesel system issues. Window regulator warranty was extended to 4 years by Renault, but this has also expired on all Mk3 models.

↔ Also consider

Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi Mk3
Renault Scenic 1.5 dCi Mk3 2009-2016
Same platform, smaller engine. K9K has piston ring coking risk and uses a timing belt instead of chain. Generally cheaper to repair but less refined.
Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 BlueHDi Mk2
Citroen C4 Picasso 1.6 BlueHDi Mk2 2013-2020
Similar overall reliability. AdBlue system failures add cost. Better infotainment but more electrical gremlins than the Scenic.
Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi Mk1
Peugeot 5008 1.6 HDi Mk1 2009-2017
Direct 7-seat competitor. Similar DPF/EGR issues. PSA electrics are slightly more reliable than Renault's but cam cover oil leaks are common.
Renault Scenic 1.6 dCi Mk4
Renault Scenic 1.6 dCi Mk4 2016-2018
Successor with the same R9M engine. Better electrics and refined cabin, but adds AdBlue complexity and expensive mandatory 20-inch tires.
Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTi C
Opel Zafira Tourer 1.6 CDTi C 2013-2019
Larger 7-seat MPV. B16DTH diesel has its own timing chain tensioner weakness. More space but higher running costs overall.
